My first Post doc was with Jerry 1973-1975. What a great/enthusiastic mentor and kind human! He let me teach part time and write my first grant (with his help and I got it). I also had a baby during the post doc. "Baby" is 50 this year! My best regards to his family whom he talked about almost as much as he talked about proteoglycans.

What a wonderful man and a wonderful family. He gave me my first job out of college - in a lab in downtown Boston in 1977 - a joy for a young 22 y.o. newbie to the field of science. I will never forget those 2 years. Jerry made us all feel like family. My condolences to Cynthia, David, Andrea, Rachel and Charles.

Dear Cynthia and family,
I was so sorry to hear of Jerry's death. I was very lucky in 1974 he accepted me as a postdoc and even allowed me to teach part time to supplement my salary. I spoke to him about 5 years ago and he said very little about himself but talked about all the successes of his children and his wife. He was so proud of everyone.
He was very kind to me and a great mentor. He helped me apply for grants (Yes! I got several but did not activate them as I got a position at NIH). I learned a lot from him and enjoyed my time in his lab at the VA. My big embarrassment was when I gave a small skin sample for Cynthia's diabetes research and fainted even though no blood was visible.
Thinking of you all during this sad time.
