I know it is quite late, as Joe Tulchin passed away nine months ago. I did not know until looking up his name today on the internet. I knew Professor Tulchin as a student in my senior year at Yale in 1965-1966. I now see how very young he was at the time, born just five years before I myself was born, and already with his PhD and starting his teaching career. His courses that year, History 85, were immensely appreciated, for his already profound knowledge of Latin American history. I wrote several papers that year, including one on "The United States Response to the Madero Revolution, 1910-1912" drawing on State Department cable archives that he pointed us toward at the Yale library. Later, in the summer of 1967, I was en route home to the U.S. after a Fulbright year in Brazil when I unexpectedly met up with Professor Tulchin in Lima, Peru -- and where he advanced me some funds to help buy a return airfare to Miami. He would have been 28 years old at the time. What a career and life he then proceeded to have. So, if this late message finds its way to the Memories, I add it with heartfelt thanks.
