CATHERINE YANDELL Obituary

CATHERINE COLT YANDELL - WILLISTON - Cathy Yandell died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at her home, surrounded by family. Her passing followed a long and spirited battle with dementia. Born on Sept. 17, 1921, to Samuel Sloan and Margaret Van Buren Colt, Cathy grew up in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. She attended the Shipley School and the New York College of Art before marrying David W. Yandell in 1940. She and David first lived in New York City, where he practiced law until his deployment during World War II. Cathy worked at Halloran Hospital in New York City, rehabilitating severely wounded soldiers while David served with the 8th Air Force in Europe. Following W.W.II, Cathy and David moved to Williston where they raised their family over the next 68 years. Cathy was active in her community, involved in numerous community projects and causes, and serving on the boards of Vermont non-profits including the Lund Home, the Vermont Red Cross, the Audubon Nature Center in Huntington, and the Vermont chapter of the National Audubon Society. Although raised in Christian Science, she attended the Williston Federated Church for many years. She was active in conservation efforts in Vermont and a driving force behind Williston's protection of the Mud Pond natural area, creation of the Williston Memorial Garden, and conservation of the Old Brick Church in Williston Village, an important architectural landmark and historic site. Cathy was a remarkable woman who will be remembered for her generosity, kindness to all living things, and reverence for beauty, qualities she valued in others and strived to instill in her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children and their families, Hope; Christine Rother and son, Sloan; Katherine Daily and son, Matthew; Robin; and David and wife, Lauren, and their sons, Evan, Duncan and Wilson. She was predeceased by siblings, Richard Colt and Marion Williamson; husband, David; and an infant daughter. The family wishes to express deepest thanks to Heidi Karic, Christa Lyman, Christine Johnson, Carol Peters, Jessica Marrier, Jamie Broomfield, Abby Desrocher and Dr. Hannah Rabin for their compassionate care of Cathy during her illness. A memorial service will be held at the Old Brick Church in Williston in May. Memorial donations may be sent to the Audubon Nature Center, 255 Sherman Hollow Road, Huntington, VT 05462.

On the one year anniversary of my mother“s death I have many happy memories of time spent with her. I will always remember her on Christmas Eve singing in the choir with her friends Mrs. Swift, Mrs. Mercia and Mrs. Riley at the Williston Federated Church in Williston, Vermont. I can still hear her voice singing her favorite carols.

Dear Robin,

My thoughts are with you and your family. Your mother seemed like someone who I would have enjoyed knowing. I lost my mom 3 1/2 years ago and I know this time is not easy. I hope you find comfort in all that comforts you.

Peace and love,
JB

Grace, gentleness, kindness, curiosity sense of humor - are just some of the qualities that come to mind when I think of her. I admired and adored my Aunt. Although the last few years may have been difficult I will always remember her as a lovely, loving and kind woman. Our loss is most certainly heaven's gain.

Cathy was soft spoken person, always talking about the birds. I to look forward to spring each year when I went by to see all the daffodils in the field, now this spring they will be one more daffodil in the field. Sending thoughts and prayers.

-- Mrs. Yandell was softspoken & independent. I looked for birdfeeders, chickens, daffodils, & sheep when traveling by her home. Was she an alto or soprano in WFC choir? --

Dear David,

I too, remember the daffodils and the beautiful lighted Christmas star in the field. I didn't know your mom, but I certainly heard wonderful things about her. You must be very proud of her legacy, and hope you and your family can find peace in that.

Cathy was a rare and very special person. She was a guiding spirit and patron of the Green Mountain Audubon Society for many years. She was passionate in her love of birds and nature. She lived with grace and modesty, loved her children and grandchildren, had great artistic talent and was a pillar of Williston's community.

I remember her wonderful laugh and humor. Her family is in my thoughts and prayers.

I got to know Cathy and the Yandells in the mid 1960s. She was wonderful woman: kind, loving, gentle, trusting, outgoing, fun loving, and interested in all kinds of things and people. Cathy made an indelible mark on her community, and will truly be missed my many including me! I am thankful for the privilege to have known Cathy.

I always found Mrs. Yandell to be the most lovely "Mom" I knew during my childhood in Williston . Her warmth, her smile and the way she wore her hair beautifully with barrettes made me want to do the same. Her daffodils in the field next to her home always a reminder that Spring had arrived. I will always remember her so fondly.

I think the flowers were forced on her by her children, but a nice photo anyway . . .

Condolences on behalf of the Little family.
Perhaps there is some solace in knowing that people like your mother who find beauty in the smallest things have an immediate sense of the ephemeral nature of all things, and of time itself.
She found beauty, and gave kindness to many with this profound understanding.

I have many cherished memories of my mother. Our bird watching walks in the woods were delightful. We would stop to admire a perfect little spider's web laced with dew drops gleaming in the sun or listen to the chorus of song birds. She taught me to find joy in every season, every new sunrise. and to delight in the discovery of the first snow drops, crocus and daffodils each spring. Her love of people and community spirit taught me a lot. But most of all she taught me the true meaning of kindness, KINDNESS....the most powerful word in the English lanquage. I will miss her beyond words.
