He served on the Montpelier Public School Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and spending time at his hunting camp in Lewis, Vt. He and his wife spent over 30 years vacationing on Kinney Shores, Maine, with family joining them. After building a summer home in Worcester, Vt., they enjoyed spending the summer months there. He enjoyed working in and harvesting apples from his orchard. Visitors with young children were treated to candy bars when he went into the woods and returned with his straw hat full of treats he had picked from his "Candy Bar Tree" that grew on the forested part of land surrounding the camp. In the early 1970s, he started a skating rink in Montpelier known as the Salt Shed, which also served the outlying towns, and was in use for many years. He was the 14th recipient of the Wm. Thayer Tutt Award from USA Hockey in 1997, attending the annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo. He retired from the Howard Bank in June 1988. Dear Ethel and family,

I am sorry to have missed this notice of Stan's death and the calling hours. As neighbors on Liberty Street for many years, Stan and you were among the very first people we met in Montpelier and those years of friendship and education were very important to me and Didi. I always enjoyed my conversations with Stan, whether it was about business or hockey or how to fix a leaky basement or rotten porch! Just the other day I looked for him at the NU hockey game in your goal end seats; gosh how time moves along!!!!

Please extend my condolences to Gary and your daughters ( whom I don't know as well. When I think of people who epitomize the character and dedication and business sense of Montpelier since WW 2, the name Stanley Grandfield rises to the top of the list.

Ethel, Gary, girls and extended family: I just returned from out of state yesterday and learned of Stan's passing. So many memories have gone through my mind. Like so many other young people of the late 60's, Stan gave John and I our financial start. His trust in us and his advice were very important as we started our married lives and family.

About a decade later, we had the pleasure of working with him on the youth hockey program. His and Ethel's leadership in getting the outdoor rink inside to a renovated salt shed is known by many. His and Ethel's leadership and contributions to youth hockey continued as the Salt Shed was replaced by the Central Vermont Civic Center on Gallison Hill. I am so glad that the current CVSA Skating organization as well as the National Organization had the opportunity to honor them a few years ago.

As I watch my grandchildren enjoy the fruits of his hockey programs, I will remember him fondly and thank you all for sharing him with us.

Mrs. Grandfield and Family,

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I was lucky enough to work with Stanley at the Howard Bank and through Triad; but my favorite time to see him was as a neighbor passing by and chatting for a few minutes.

He has always held a special place in my heart; always a gentleman and a constant teacher - he will be missed by many.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time of losing a husband, Father, Grandfather, and friend. May all the wonderful memories you've made over the years comfort you during this time.

To Ethel and her family,

Sending you and your family my deepest condolences. You are all in my thoughts and prayers at this time. I have such fond memories of Stan and will cherish them forever. I met Stan when he hired me at Triad Temporary Services as a receptionist and later asked me to become his office manager. I learned so much from him during the 19 years that I worked for him. He had such compassion and kindness for the people that would come into Triad looking for work. To see him reach into his pocket and give a twenty-dollar bill to someone for gas money until they got paid and only asked them to pay him back if they could. It was never a surprise to see that individual come in after cashing his check and walk into Stan's office to pay him back.

Those ‘get together's for Triad employees in Worcester put on by you and Stan will always be remembered. They were so special and fun; especially that Chocolate Bar Tree is still talked about today by my grandchildren. And the kids sure did have fun in the pond during those outings.

I could write much, much more but will visit often and we can reminisce about such things at that time.

I know that Stan is at peace now and I picture him sitting on his porch in Worcester looking at the mountains and watching for his turkeys and checking his apple trees.

Fondly,

April 15, 2014

Ethel & Family - my sincere condolences on the loss of such a wonderful man. Stan was a huge influence in my life. I have fond memories of the time we worked together at Triad and was his General manager for Temp Services. We all had such a wonderful time in Hawaii (my reward for getting his payroll system up and running!). I was honored that he asked my husband and I to join you on vacation. Then there were the great lunches at Peking Duck! I know he's probably still enjoying his "Bombay" in heaven. Rest in Peace Sweet Man, you surely deserve it. Much Love! Mary Paule Hill

Terri and I are sorry to hear of Stan's passing. He was a great guy, and had a huge influence on me when I worked for him at the Howard Bank in Burlington so many years ago (70s).

Stan was a very bright man, and a great teacher. I was an inexperienced young guy when I met Stan, and he not only helped me become a commercial lender, but he also helped me to become a more responsible young man.

Many of the fellows I worked with/for at the Howard have passed on; and I will forever be in their debt. Stan was a gem, and Vermont has lost one of its "good guys". Glad I had a chance to thank him a few years ago.

Condolences to his family. We know he will be missed

RIP, Stan.
