Thomas O'Connor Obituary

Thomas Frances O'Connor

Thomas F. O'Connor, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on the evening of June 6th, 2020, after a long and valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born on July 16,1934, in Bellows Falls, Vermont, the son of Edward and Sarah O'Connor, who predeceased him.

Surviving him are his wife Ellen, his daughters Susan O'Connor, MD and Holly Venugopal, PA and their families: Matthew, Sarah and Rebecca Seifert of Glenburn, Maine and Venu, Nikila and Sandhya Venugopal of Sammamish, Washington.

In 1961, Tom graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in Civil Engineering. He specialized in structural design and, though he worked on several million-dollar projects, he was proudest of "The Bridge of Flowers", an award winning pedestrian bridge in Greenfield, Massachusetts. As a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, he was dedicated to the support of mathematics in middle school students regularly participating in the Mathletes program.

After retiring, he was appointed by the Governor to the Vermont State Board of Professional Engineering, serving as a member and then as Chairman of the Board, a position of which he was also proud.

Tom loved his family, his friends and his succession of large-breed dogs (Duke, Golly, Buddy, Jake and Bubba). He was also a loyal fan of his Pats, Red Sox and Bruins and was always up for a party where he enjoyed "quaffing a few" with his friends. He was an enthusiastic camper and liked nothing better than a roaring campfire on a cool summer night.

He and Ellen loved Acadia and, over the years, hiked many of its trails. Tom's idea of "heaven" was a cold beer, a large lobster, freshly picked corn on the cob and all the "fixins"...followed by strawberry shortcake, of course.

Tom's hero was the type of man portrayed by John Wayne in his movie roles and he lived his life accordingly. The family is grateful that he passed away peacefully in his sleep. Farewell pilgrim.

The family extends their thanks and appreciation for the excellent and compassionate care he received at Westgate. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Tom, I love The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls! Many years ago there was an article about it in Yankee Magazine and it immediately became a must visit for me.
I could be spotted with a little notebook writing down the name of new and spectacular plants & flowers growing there. Its a pleasure to know that Tom was behind something that brings so much joy to all that go there. I look forward to going there again and thinking of him.

I worked with Tom from 1980 when I joined Webster-Martin until he retired.
Always a hard worker, but he loved what he did!
My condolences to his family.

I worked for Tom at Webster-Martin from 1984 until his retirement. He was a great mentor, and taught me everything I know about bridge engineering. Every morning he would get a cup of coffee and stop by my office just to chat for a few minutes. These would often evolve into long technical discussions about the projects we were working on. He always had a smile and I don't ever remember him being in a bad mood (unless we did something stupid, which fortunately wasn't often). I still quote Tom's more popular sayings to my younger staff...including, 'Its not a mistake until it goes out the door" , and the ever popular "let your conscience be your guide". I'm very grateful for having had Tom as a supervisor, mentor, and friend. My sincere condolences to Ellen, Sue , Holly and his entire family.

Tom hired me to join the Webster-Martin structural team in 1983.
We then worked on several projects together over the years.
He inspired hard work while still enjoying work.
He was a great mentor and well respected. Had a great sense of humor and laugh. My condolences to Tom's family.

My condolences to the family. I worked for and with Tom at Webster-Martin in South Burlington from when I joined the firm in the late seventies until his retirement. Tom was an excellent engineer and I have a great deal of respect for him as I consider him a mentor to me in the early part of my career. We speak of him often at our office. As engineer's we are always looking to do better and one of his sayings still holds true; "It is not a mistake until it leaves the office"! I have used that phrase many times throughout my career.

I never met this wonderful man, but I thank him for his contribution to our Bridge of Flowers here in Shelburne Falls, MA. I can see it from my window....now I'll remember him whenever I see it!

Ellen & Family
So sorry to read about Tom. I used to take care of your mom and dad on Patrick St. and have fond memories of them. You were such a devoted daughter and did so much for them. Ellen Hood
