Xenophon Griveas Obituary

Xenophon J. Griveas 1943 - 2016
age 72, passed away unexpectedly on April 4, 2016. Xen was born Aug. 27, 1943, in Etylon Laconia Greece to James and Stamatoula (Bogeas) Griveas. He was preceded in death by his father, father-in-law, Panagiotis Lemos, and brother-in-law, Steve Kavourias. Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Mary (Lemos); children, Stephanie (Mike) Nastoff, James (Amanda), Eftihia (Marcello) Frustaci; and his five grandchildren, who were the light of his life and provided his greatest happiness, Alexa Nastoff, Lila Griveas, Maria, Gia and Marco Frustaci. He is also survived by his mother; sister, Helen Kavourias; her sons, Billy and Jimmy (Meg); brother, Mike; mother-in-law, Eftichia Emos; brother-in-law, Steve (Rebecca) Lemos; nephew, Peter Lemos; niece, Eva (Scott) Paradis; their children, Malaina and Steven, as well as a large extended family and Godchildren, all of whom he loved very much.
Xen was a retired administrator from Canton City Schools, having devoted his life and career to being a positive influence and making a difference in the education and well being of every life he touched. His career began in 1968 at Lincoln High School as a teacher and basketball coach. Xen eventually became an administrator and finished his career as principal of Timken High School and then assistant superintendent. A man of true Christian faith, Xen was an active member of Saint Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, loved his church and considered the entire community his second family. He served in various capacities for many years on the Parish Council, including President as well as many committees/organizations of his beloved church. Xen was named Man of the Year and was also bestowed the Archdiocesan Medal of Saint Paul for his outstanding service and commitment to his church. He was a member of Ahepa Chapter 59 and various school-related organizations. Xen's greatest legacy and joy was his family. Though a humble man, he was extremely proud of his children and especially his grandchildren. Xen frequently interrupted conversations with family and friends to share their pictures and videos. They were truly his pride and joy! Xen enjoyed golfing with his buddies and playing poker with friends. He also looked forward to and enjoyed many Myrtle Beach trips with his family and special friends. Xen's was truly a life well lived! He unselfishly gave of his time, talents and treasures to everyone with whom he came into contact. He will be dearly missed by all those who loved him! Our family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude for the many prayers and wonderful support we have received from Father Nick, family and friends during this difficult time. The outpouring of support continues to be a tribute to his memory and we thank you.
Family and friends will be received Thursday evening, April 7 from 5 to 8 pm (Trisagion at 7 pm) at Saint Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, 251 – 25th Street NW, Canton OH 44709. Visitation continues Friday morning, April 8 between 10-11 am at the church; funeral service beginning at 11 am with Father Nicholas V. Gamvas officiating, assisted by Rev. Deacon Keric J. Shiepis, D.C. Internment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery and will include a service by his brother Ahepans. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate memorial donations in his honor and memory to Saint Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church.

As a young 13 year-old Freshman at Lincoln High School, I had the pleasure and joy of having Mr.Griveas as my cross-country coach. He was disciplined in his coaching, yet flexible and understanding of the teams's needs and concerns. He had a mild temperament, and was always upbeat, personable, and encouraging to the entire cross-country team. We all respected and believed in Mr. Griveas!

I shall never forget the personal encouragement he gave me the first time I ran around the park next to Lincoln high during my first season of running. I had never run before and didn't know if I was up to the challenge of being a long distance runner. However, there was Mr. Griveas with his stop watch, praising my efforts and urging me to run just a little faster and do a little better next lap. He helped me to believe in ME!

Because of his belief in me and his upbeat attitude, I became a good runner and would earn a varsity letter in my Sophomore year--thanks to Mr. Griveas' coaching, leadership, love, and kindness.

God bless the Griveas family, and all those who are feeling the loss of this kind, gentle, giant of a man, coach, and teacher.

We all have that one teacher/educator that we never forget. For me, that person will always be Mr. Griveas. He was my principal at Lehman in the early 80s and was truly one of the kindest and most compassionate people I have ever known. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Dear Mary,Stephanie,Jim,& Eutyxia, and the entire extended Griveas family. My sincerest condolences on the passing of your dear husband and father,Xenophon. His passing is a great loss to your family and our Greek Orthodox community. Xen will be remembered for his dedication to the education of the youth of Canton, his faith and church and most importantly, his love for you,his family. A man of great conviction and determination, his dedication to his faith and to St. Harlambos was quite evident in parish matters. He could easily disagree on matters but did so respectfully with the best interests of the community at heart. It is this exceptional dedication that should serve as an example for future leaders of the Greek Orthodox community. Reflect on his great leadership accomplishments and the countless lives he positively influenced as an educator, father and papou.
May Xen's memories be eternal.

I was so saddened to hear the news of Mr. Griveas' passing from the Lincoln Alumni page. Mr. Griveas was my Algebra teacher at Lincoln High School. Math was always an intimidating subject area for me, but Mr. Griveas helped make math less scary. As a teacher now myself, I have often thought of him over the years. It truly is a small world! I was blessed to have Mr. Griveas as my teacher, and I was so blessed to be his son-in-law Marcello's teacher. My deepest sympathies to the family. May God provide loving peace and comfort during this difficult time.
