To John's family, my heartfelt condolences. We were Evans Scholars at the U of I in the late 60's. I remember John as a great guy and always generous. (He gave me several rides home from Champaign even though it was out of his way.) I ran into him a couple of years ago at Willow Hill, and we had a nice conversation. He was gregarious as always. To hear on the news that he had passed was very sad. I lost a brother to cancer a year ago, so I am well aware of the loss that you all feel. My best to you in the months ahead. John's was a life well lived.

Dear Kathy & Family,
I am not sure if you will remember us, Mel & Margaret Everly from Immanuel Lutheran Church back in the 70's & 80's but we remember you and John very well. We would like to offer our sincere condolences on John's passing to you and your family. He was such a great guy. Outgoing, compassionate and thoughtful. He and I talked often about teaching and coaching since I taught at New Trier at that time. He will be greatly missed, by you and family.
Sincerely, Mel & Margaret Everly

Kathy, I am so sorry to hear of John's passing. I was put of town and unable to attend the services. Although we were competitors on the field off we were good friends. He was a great man who loved you and the boys very much. He did alot of great things for his players and students at ETHS. I will miss him. You have my thoughts and prayers,

Dear Riehle Family. I am so saddened to hear of the loss of John. As I read some of the entries I was moved by how many lives he touched and changed for the better. As a young girl growing up at Immanuel I remember him as such a BIG man and a little scary to a small child, but he was one of the kindest gentle people I ever met.

I rember when John was born, how happy we were. His grandfather was so proud of him. He would even be prouder today knowing what John has accomplished in his life. We in the Bonatz family are glad he was part of it. Kathy may you and your sons have the peace of mind to know that he is home now.

To the Riehle Family-
I'm so sorry for your loss. The Coach was too good, too young, too classy a guy to go to Heaven this early. I remember him fondly as a 'can do' coach and dad...who raised some terrific kids, his own and countless others. Be proud of this very good guy, and I hope your memories will be handed down for generations. God love you, JB

What a tremendous coach, athletic director, husband, father and person in general. I had great respect for John and saw him as someone who always sought for excellence in whatever he did and expected it as well from those in his charge. He loved his job, his students, his athletes and that love was only surpassed by his love for his wife, his sons and his God. John will be missed but his memory will carry on. My condolences to his wife and family. May God wrap His arms around you and comfort you.

Coach Riehle, the most pivotal Football Coach and AD for the following generation of players, students and staff under his command who followed my generation at Evanston. Coach Lazier, I and other players of my era were often present at his most important football games and victories and couldn't have been happier from what he led and achieved. Great Teacher, Coach, Administrator and Man. Our total condolences to his family from my father and the Wildkit extended family we all truly are from that so special and unique place called Evanston.

Dear Mrs. Riehle, Matt and family,
We did not know John except through the loving words Matt always had about his Dad. We know Matt because our aunt is at the nursing home in Bloomington where Matt exhibits that same loving care for all the residents he learned through his family. Our deepest sympathy to all of you. Kathy, Matthew, Mark and Luke,
I know how much you will miss John and his presence and love. He was so important to everyone who knew him. Some of the things I will remember most: listening to some of his legendary and sometimes hysterical pep talks from my office, the number of head sets he broke, having "the greatest job and family in America",
his laugh and his willingness to laugh at himself, his stories about the cast of characters he met when he worked at the race track, his ability to make everyone he talked to feel important, his propensity for hyperbole, the Racing Times, his loyalty, his kindness when my Dad died, his love for golf and cards, his work ethic, his endless stream of beater cars especially the one with the hole in the floor board, never wearing a jacket no matter what the weather, his enthusiasm for a good menu, family parties, his willingness to cry before John Boehner made it popular and stories about his yellow leisure suit. My love to you all at this sad time.

This morning I received a few text messages informing me that Coach John Riehle passed away. My thoughts are with his family. Coach Riehle dedicated his life to helping youth. His passion was rich as his bark was loud. Coach's practices and pregame speeches were legendary.
On the eve of a big game, he'd gather his team. "Gentlemen, take a knee." He would begin by quietly asking a few questions. He put an emphasis on the words "you" and "believe". "Do YOU BELIEVE you've worked hard"? After each question, 50 to 60 seventeen and eighteen year olds would respond in unison "I BELIEVE"! Each question he asked -- his voice grew -- he became more animated. So did we. After five or six questions, the entire team would be standing and bellowing. "I BELIEVE." At this point, Coach would tweak his final questions. He changed the word "You" to "we.". "Do WE BELIEVE we're going to win tomorrow:? The energy was electric. We'd respond "WE BELIEVE." Coach would put his hand to his ear and say "Do we believe we're going to dominate tomorrow"? We'd repeat "WE BELIEVE"!
We were just kids, but after his speeches,we felt like we where on top of the world.
Today I"m reminded of mortality, but I BELIEVE coach Riehle lives on through his family and in each kid he ever coached.
RIP Coach. Thank you.

Kathy,Matthew, Mark and Luke you are a great family and I believe that you know my feelings re John. I had the good fortune to have John phone me a number of years ago to see if I needed another coach at Elmhurst College. He was not only a super coach, but a very loyal and compassionate man who loved his family, his faith and coaching young men. I miss him dearly...good memories of him are plenty. I'm glad that I have an enlarged photo of him and I from our Elmhurst College days that proudly is placed in a collection of photos in my computer room, I see it and I smile.

To Coach Riehle's family: Coach Riehle was a badge of honor for all student athletes and their parents at ETHS. We all felt we had the best athletic director on the North Shore and we did. He was firm, but fair-minded and a mentor to so many young people. We are so sorry for your loss (Dick and Mary Gleason)
