Margaret Flood Obituary

Once upon a time, an extremely handsome Irishman fell in love with a Grecian-Italian Beauty. Margaret passed away peacefully on Veteran's Day November 11, 2022 in the comfort of her home, as was her request, with family by her side and friends nearby. Friends, she had many in her entire life. Margaret was the daughter of John Theodore Sares and Isabella Maria Sares. After graduating from North Park Academy, she worked for the CTA at the Merchandise Mart, JW Marriott O'Hare, and Continental Bank on LaSalle Street. The job she enjoyed the most was the most important one of all and that was being a wife and mother. Margaret was a very smart, well-spoken, strong woman. Margaret was predeceased by her husband, John Francis Flood in 2009 and their only son, Thomas John Flood in 1977 who was killed near their home in an automobile accident shortly after his graduation from Holy Cross High School. Their marriage grew even stronger. She was a talented musician who followed Bob Dylan at his concert tours, a true-blue Chicagoan, and a devoted Chicago Bulls fan.

Margaret was predeceased by her brothers, Arthur Paul Sares and Theodore Roland Sares, sister, LaRue Isabella Sares-Boenig. She leaves a daughter, Marla Jane Flood and Marla's male mentor, Santino, Chicago, IL, Mary Kay Duggan Dolton, IL, Jack Chiovatero New Berlin, WI, Allison Sares Irvine, CA, Holly Sares North Conway, NH, June Johnson Arlington Heights, IL, Tony and Chrissy Clementi Wood Dale, IL.

To the Sares family, especially in the little village of Lamia, Greece, the highly connected Ivino and Rinaldi families of Northern Italy, Flood and Cusick families of Chicago and Morris IL, and all over the map of Ireland. Light a candle.

St. Joseph Cemetery River Grove, IL.

Our lives touch so many in ways that sometimes we do not realize. I did not know Margaret, but I do know her daughter, Marla. Margaret introduced Marla to ballet at a very early age. Dancing her whole life, Marla now dances at the Chicago Ballet Center where I am her teacher. It is a delight to have Marla dancing here . .and that is only because Margaret set the wheels in motion. Thank you, Margaret. Now I get to dance with Marla because of you!

Dear Marla, It was my pleasure to get to know, Maggie as our neighbor. She was a kind, thoughtful, very strong lady. She had a good sense of humor. When least expected she would have a cute comment that would give a good chuckle. I enjoyed hearing stories about her Greek/ Italian parents and heritage. Her siblings, extended family members and pets. She spoke lovingly about your, Dad, Johnny, and what a sweet, kind man he was. And how much they enjoyed playing golf. You, Marla and how proud she was of you, your job and your musical talent. She did not forget your brother, Tommy. He remained in her heart. It was obvious she loved music as she displayed instruments in her home and told me memorable stories about them. Although she left Chicago many years ago to live in Florida, she never lost her fondness for the windy city. Last but not least, her beloved VW Bug. She was so proud to drive it. Marla, I know losing your Mother is not easy. I grieve along with you for the loss of my dear friend, Maggie. She was a treasure.

Cousin Marla,
Aunt Margaret will always be remembered as a true Beauty inside and out, as shown by her strength and love for her family. You have been an exceptional daughter in the way that you cared for her and through your words in this loving tribute. It has been a privilege to be her niece and I will always cherish our memories.

My dear cousin Margaret, I want to pick up the phone and call you. I miss our conversations, they must have been important because they were hours long. Miss you more than you could possibly know.

Marla, your retelling of your mom´s story is lovely. It´s one more gift you´ve given to her. Your Aunt Ruth and I knew "Marge" as a devoted wife always to Uncle Johnny, only matched by her devotion to you and Tommy. I´m grateful to her for encouraging us cousins to get to know each other and so to my becoming your sponsor at your confirmation at St. Francis Borgia. I remember her faith after the worst happened. I remember her love of dogs and gardening. The hosta that Tommy gave her and that she shared with me comes back every year. And Marla, among your beautiful mom´s many gifts was your unwavering faithfulness to her especially in the last days and now even after.

So beautiful to read about Margaret's life and sending condolences to the whole family. As Margaret's daughter Marla's violin teacher, I know that Margaret had a huge musical influence on Marla that continues to this very day. Marla has shared how very important music was to her mom and to her and that it continues to be a link between them that will last forever. I am so grateful to know Marla and to have heard so many stories about her mom -- especially as she traveled to be with Margaret regularly, talked to her daily and shared her musical progress and even played for her over the phone and in the various facilities. Godspeed Margaret and thank you for being a musical angel to Marla!
