Dr. Stuart "Randy" Winston, a neurosurgeon and resident of Surprise, AZ, and Fargo, ND, died unexpectedly on November 13, 2016, at the age of 79 while playing golf in Scottsdale, AZ. Randy was born in Chicago, IL, on July 27, 1937. He earned his bachelor of arts from Northwestern University, Doctor of Medicine from Chicago Medical School, and completed a neurosurgery residency at Northwestern University. He served in the US Army at Tripler U.S. Army Hospital in Honolulu, HI. Randy practiced in Lincoln, NE, Waterloo and Des Moines, IA, and at Barrow Neurosurgical Associates in Phoenix, AZ, before retiring. He married Norma Coupland in Honolulu, HI, on March 7, 1959. Subsequently, they welcomed three beautiful daughters who were the most important part of his life. On October 19, 1991, he married Dr. Jane Dietz in Fargo, ND. Randy had a beautiful singing voice and loved music. A true renaissance man, he was passionate about many subjects, including the arts, philosophy, golf, fishing, and technology. He was a lifelong learner and loved to master new disciplines. He served as a docent (Las Guias) at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, and was a board member at Benevilla in Surprise, AZ. Randy is survived by his wife Jane (Dietz) Winston; Norma (Coupland) Winston, St. George, UT; his daughters Margaret (Tony) Puls, Des Moines, IA; Leslie (Aaron Biesbrock) Winston, Maineville, OH; Heather (Ryan Mapus) Winston, Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren Adam (Danielle Neary) Puls, Megan Puls, Kellen Biesbrock, and Devin Biesbrock; and his sister Penny (Winston) Stein, St. Louis, MO. He was predeceased by his parents Bernice and Harold Winston. His ashes will be inurned at Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City West, AZ. Memorial reception will be held on Friday, November 18th, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Briarwood Country Club. In lieu of flowers, his family designates donations to Benevilla of Surprise. Dr. Winston did my cervical fusion 30 years ago this Nov. at Mercy Hospital and God used him to bring healing to my neck for the surgery was completely successful and I have always been so thankful for him. I´m sorry to see he passed so young. Thank you Randy. LB

Jane and family - My thoughts and prayers go out to you all. I met Randy for the first time the morning of his passing. He greeted me with a smile and a warm handshake. It was at that point I learned he would be a fellow golfer in our foursome. I was with Randy when he suffered his emergency until the paramedics took over. I was hesitant to make this post, however I feel it's only right I let you know Randy was playing great and having fun. He didn't appear to be suffering at any time. Everyone in our group played a role from CPR to ensuring EMT's arrived asap. I wish you and your family warm lasting memories. - Randall Epson

I was sorry to hear of Dr. Winston's passing. I will forever be grateful to him for the excellent surgery he performed on my back in 1978.

After suffering many months and only able to walk with crutches I was hospitalised and a friend recommended him.

I will never forget him walking into my room in his cowboy boots and after a brief exam said, "you need surgery and I am goingto fix you". Late the next day he did surgery and my back has been good ever since.

It was his confidence and positive attitude that convinced me to place myself in his hands. May he rest in peace.

I am saddened to hear of Randy's passing, he was wonderful individual and a very good surgeon. I knew Randy in the OR where he worked with skill and compassion for his patients. He was a gentleman and stood up for people and causes with a passion.

I also had the privilege of playing a few rounds with Randy in Des Moines. He was an enthusiastic golfer with a quick laugh, often finding humor in the game and in in his own swing. It makes me smile a little that he left us with club in hand - on the battlefield so to speak.

A name from the past . . .I want to let you know how sorry I was to learn of Randy's death and please know how much I think of you and him from your time in Des Moines. You are both special people and he will be missed, that's for sure.
