Madeline Hanewicz Obituary

Madeline Hanewicz passed on to eternal life on Christmas Eve morning, Dec. 24, 2012. "Mal"/"Maddie" was 93 years old. Madeline has been the matriarch of her family for many years, and her family meant the world to her.

She was born Madeline Gazey in Wilkes-Barre, and continued her life there for 89 years. Afterwards, she moved to Brookfield, Conn., and has been a resident of Bethel Health Care since 2010.

Madeline was predeceased by her parents, John and Jennie Gazey, as well as seven siblings. Madeline was fortunate in her life to have two loves, Harold (Dutch) Snyder, and John Hanewicz, both of whom preceded her in death.

She is survived by her son, Wayne and wife, Cheryl, Draper, Utah; daughter, Valerie and husband, Herb Kemp, Mount Laurel, N.J.; and daughter, Jeanine, and husband, Lou Memoli, Brookfield, Conn. She is missed and adored by her grandchildren, Wayne and Christopher Hanewicz, Jamaal and Benjamin Kemp, Emily Hanewicz, Stephanie Burgess, Jennifer Calabrese and Lauren Memoli; and great-grandchildren, Isabel Hanewicz and Luca Calabrese.

During her life, Mal was active in St. Mary's Syrian Antiochian Church of Wilkes-Barre, where she often helped with coffee hour following Sunday services, and was active with the Ladies Auxiliary. She would not miss a bingo game within a 100-mile radius of where she was. During her younger years, she worked at various restaurants, and later in life, she was employed by Caregivers of America.

She was feisty, funny and fearless and will be missed every day.

A celebration of Madeline's life will be held at the Brookfield Congregational Church in Brookfield, Conn., at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013.

Donations in Madeline's honor may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.
