Dr. James V. Burnside, 87, died Sunday, December 22, 2013 at the State Veterans Home in Jackson. A visitation will be held from 1:00p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2013 at the Provine Chapel at Mississippi College in Clinton. A graveside service will follow at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Wiggins Cemetery in Carthage. Dr. Burnside was born on May 18, 1926, in Goodhope, MS, the son of the late Frank and Ola Burnside. He was a graduate of LSU where he earned both his Bachelor and Master's Degree in Education. Dr. Burnside continued his education, earning his PhD from the University of Mississippi. A veteran he served his country in the US Air Force. Dr. Burnside was a Professor of Mathematics at Mississippi College for 32 years. He served as Chair of the Mathematics Department from 1978 to his retirement in 1992. After retirement, Dr. Burnside continued teaching on a graduate level for 7 years. Dr. Burnside and his wife, Lucy loved to travel and had traveled to 48 states. He was an avid woodworker for 25 years. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his 8 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his best friend and love of his life, Lucy H. Burnside of Clinton and numerous nieces, nephews and his extended Mississippi College family. Memorials may be made to the Dr. James V. Burnside Scholarship Fund at Mississippi College, P.O. Box 4005, Clinton, MS 39058.

I was struck harder than I could have imagined to hear about Dr. Burnside's death. He was a marvelous human being as well as a brilliant teacher. His heart and soul touched all of us at Provine. His legacy will be with us always.

What a wonderful man he was! Not only was he a great math teacher, but he had such a kind and gentle nature he could really relate to kids. Many days I would just "hang out" in his classroom, because I loved being around him. He truly cared, inspired, and appreciated his students. I am blessed to have been one of his students.

Mr Burnside was my Algebra 1 teacher at Peoples Junior High in the early sixties. He was a wonderful math teacher and helped me to understand and appreciate the beauty and consistency of mathematics. He was truly one of a kind. My regrets and prayers to his family.
