Ruby Bishop Obituary

Ruby Bishop, 90, died Thursday, July 19, 2007 after a long illness. The family will receive friends 3-5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. Monday at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home on High Street in Jackson. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 23, 2007 at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Lakewood Memorial Park.
Ruby was born December 29, 1916 in New Orleans, La. She was the wife of the late James M. Bishop, Sr.
Ruby moved to Jackson at the age of 12 when her mother, Ruby Ticoulet Wright, married Douglas Fondren, Jr. All of the Fondren family lovingly called her "little Ruby". When at Central High School Ruby was involved with many things. Among all her many other talents and involvements, she had the honor of being chosen to play on the first ladies basketball team.
She was best known for her musical career in Jackson which spanned over 5 decades including radio, TV and many memorable establishments of fine dining like the King Edward Hotel, the Heidelberg, The Rotisserie and in later years the Golden Dragon. Ruby was a familiar guest singer on the on the Farmer Jim Neal Show and often appeared with long-time best friend Be Be Kay on WLBT. She was the manager for many years at the record department of Werlins for Music. Many Jackson families will fondly remember her when recalling celebrations at special occasions like birthdays and weddings, all the while, dancing to the beautiful voice and music of Ruby Bishop and her combo.
Mrs. Bishop is survived by her daughter, Jean Ann Bishop Jackson and husband, Bobby; son James M. Bishop, Jr. and wife, Pat, of Jackson; three grandchildren, Bobby Jackson and wife, Terri, Julie Elmore and husband, Bobby, and Jamison Burt Bishop of Baton Rouge, La; six great-grandchildren, Kayla Caldwell, Savanna Elmore, Matthew Elmore all of Jackson, and Reed Bishop, Vicki and Nicki Bishop of Louisiana.

Jim and Pat:
We are always at a loss of words when we loose our loved ones. Sometimes just a hug or a hand squeeze expresses it all.
I never had the privilege of knowing your mom but from her obit, she must have enjoyed life to the fullest until her healtlh declined.
It is not what we take with us, it is what we leave behind that really matters. God allows us the ability to retain beautiful memories. These become so precious, never allows us to forget. God Bless you as you grieve. Jody
