Connie Toedtli Obituary

CONNIE ALDEN TOEDTLI
Nov. 23, 1936 ~ Aug. 29, 2009

Connie Alden Toedtli, 72, died at his Vancouver, WA home, peacefully in his sleep, Saturday evening, August 29, 2009. He had been challenged by multiple strokes over the last three years. Born in 1936 in Tillamook, OR, the son of Ernest and LaVerne Toedtli, he moved with his family to Orchards, WA in 1947, where he worked for the family dairy, Early Dawn Dairy. He graduated from Evergreen High School in 1955.
After high school, he joined the Oregon Air National Guard, where he went to work full time in 1961. During this time, he worked in the motor pool, honing his bodywork and painting skills.
He married his wife, Jo Ann Kays in 1962, and bought the family farm from his parents in 1963.
In 1965, Connie partnered with his brother Vern Toedtli to start Todd's Auto Painting, on the old family farm. Connie left the Oregon Air National Guard in 1966 to concentrate on their newly formed business. Later renamed Todd's Auto Body, he worked there until 2001 when he retired, selling his half of the business to his brother Vern.
Always looking for new opportunities, he founded Northwest Auto Paint Supplies Inc. in 1978, bringing his brother Vern in as a silent partner and recruiting their nephew to run the business. Later, selling their shares of the business, Connie looked forward to his next venture - incorporating his two sons and daughter with his love of classic American vehicles. In 1989, Connie and his wife Jo Ann started All American Classics, Inc., on that same family farm. Specializing in American vehicles from the 1930s through the 1980s, the wrecking yard is managed by son Todd, and also employs son Tracy, and daughter Terri.
Even though the dairy cows were long gone, Connie never lost his love of cattle and the farm life. He maintained his beef cattle and tended his large garden until his first stroke in 2006. He was an avid reader of Western novels, and loved Country and Western music. He enjoyed taking his 1948 Chevrolet Fleetline or his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air he had owned since 1959 to cruise-ins, and going to swap meets.
Connie was a real people person, and always had a joke
or a story to tell. Most of all he loved his family and grandsons.
Connie leaves his wife of 47 years, Jo Ann Toedtli; his son; Todd Toedtli and his wife Lois, and their two sons, Tyler and Ryan; his son; Tracy Toedtli; his daughter, Terri Buell and her husband Rob, and their two sons Owen and Cooper. He also leaves his sisters, Donna (Everett) Timmons of Long Beach, Eileen (Dale) Abernathy of Camas, Becky Anne (David) McKenzie also of Camas; brother, Vern (Doris) Toedtli of Vancouver; numerous nieces and nephews; and many close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Tina Berrios, Michelle Nolan, and especially Rita Belyanskaya. Rita cared for Connie for the last year and a half of his life. She never treated him like a patient, but with the love and respect of a family member. She will always be part of the Toedtli family. The greatest thanks of all, goes to his loving wife Jo Ann, who was always there for him, just as he was always there for her.
Services will be held Saturday, September 5, 2009 at 12:30 p.m., with visitation Friday, September, 4, 2009, 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 1101 NE 112th Avenue, Vancouver, WA.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association www.mda.org.

JoAnn and family, I am sorry for the tardiness in expressing my sincere prayers for your loss. I remember sitting at Todd's Auto Body for hours on end while our husbands chatted about everything and everybody. I remember one time when Connie tried to get Blaine and I to take home a new batch of kittens and all 3 of the kids cried. After that I couldn't have taken a Toedtli kid's kitten no matter how many they had.... Over the years, cars came and went, but friendship stayed above all. Connie, stories, jokes, and his stoagies, they don't come any better. Heaven will never be the same now that Connie is there! Everytime you hear thunder, realize it is really God's laughter at one of Connie's stories. I probably don't have this quite right, but Connie "BCNU"...... Toedtli family, you have multitudes of stories and memories - enjoy each and every one of them. Please know that one day you will all be joined together again.

How does one even begin to express such deep feelings and a lifetime of memories of a great brother. He did so much to boost my lack of confidence many times. Many times he said he and brother Vern would never have gone in the business they were in had it not been for my husband, Tim. He just never realized that he was the one with the charm and ability to further that business. I loved his visits to us in Redding, California and it was always during August when Redding was so very hot. JoAnn and Connies children where the best visitors one could have. Great kids and I will always say Todd is the tallest Toedtli I have ever seen. A great family and my heart goes out to them all and the grandchildren he loved so much.

Love you always Connie, your big sister

While attending my Grandma's funeral yesterday I learned of Connie's passing. When I was 18 (19 yrs ago)I took my truck to Connie. With all of the damage, I wanted to repaint the whole truck which they didn't do. Not only did Connie offer to repaint the truck but he let me come in and do some of the basic prep work. The paint still looks great & he always treated me like the most important customer. I am lucky to have met him.

To the Toedtli Family.
Knowing the Toedtli family from the early 1950's it became quite clear that Connie was one of the gifted ones. He had the ability to make everyone he met feel like they were special. He was one that could walk into a room and within 30" he knew most everyone and everyone wanted to know him. That is a gift few people have. Your memories will carry you through.

JoAnn and Family
Words are hard to find at this time. After Mom"s passing just two weeks ago I knew I needed to send you a small note to let you know just how much Jerry and I will miss seeing Connie at our far and few between family get togethers. He was a very special guy who could bring a smile to any one's face, with one of his great stories, and great personality.
Our hearts go out to you all.

JoAnn & Family
I sit hear reading through the guest book and I wonder what to write about an association who have been friends, classmates and neighbors for so long. There will always be memories of our younger years and Connie swinging on my beautiful wagon wheel light fixture and sleeping in my gold bath tub and the hugs and kisses and stories he loved to share. Gene and I will really miss our friend Connie but I'm certain he is having a glass of wine, a cigar and relaxing in his fancy western hat and telling a few good jokes to the man upstairs. Love to you Jo and your family. Gene & Linda

I will always remember all the fun time that our families had together. One of my favorite memories is of all the trout fishing trips we went on with Uncle Connie, I remember waiting all year for opening day. We would get up at 5:00 am and look out the window or his headlights to show up across the cornfield and the we would spend the day fishing. There are far too many memories to share. Love Dale Mckenzie and family.

We took trips buying cars, parts and going to swap meets. what fun we had.We worked together,we played together and those were always good times. Joanne, Tracy, Terri and Todd,

One of my favorite memories of Connie is from the early 50's. Connie would pick me up on Friday night in his Dad's milk truck and away we'd go to Holcomb's Skating Rink. The plan was to skate...however...I would skate and Connie would shoot the breeze with everyone. Even then, he seemed to know everyone and cared about them.

Sandy and I always appreciated the way Connie included us in your "family" dinners at Los Dos. We began to feel like we were part of the Toedtli family. It was always light hearted and Connie kept us all laughing.

Connie was an important person in my life and I'll miss him. I'm just happy to have 57 years worth of "Connie memories."

A friend and classmate.

After reading over the first pages that people are writing about Connie, everyone said what a great and happy guy he was. It's hard to say it with enough meaning. I don't think any of us can say it enough. Ronnie and I worked off and on for Connie over the years painting cars. I always looked forward to going to the shop to listen to Connie's jokes. He was one of a kind and I know how much he loved JoAnne and his kids because he never hesitated to say it.
His family will miss him, we will miss him. We were all lucky to know him, he touched a lot of lives.

For Jo Ann, Todd, Tracy, Terrie and their families. What a sad day to have to say goodbye to such a wonderful man. All of you were and still are truly blessed to have him in your life. I have so many fun memories of your family when I was growing up since we were related at one time for quite awhile. The cows, driving the hay truck, playing in the nasty mud at the trough, to building hay forts and having rotten egg fights. And can't forget that mean old tom turkey, these are the memories that come to mind when I hear Connie's name. Jo Ann I still remember the cows tongue that you use to cook as well. Sure miss all of you. But as I say goodbye I will cherish the most vivid memory of all and that would be of Connie in his blue work overalls covered in bondo dust smoking a cigar and telling a joke. I will miss you Connie!

Well, I could say a whole lot of good things about my Uncle 'Tex" but the main thing here is that he is gonna be missed very much by many people but he is in a better place where he wont be hurting anymore. Anyone who he came in contact with Connie throughout his life can only say good things about him and how he would light up a room with a burnt out bulb. Uncle Tex...I will miss you very much. Prayers to the rest of the family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Joanne and family. I am so glad to have had the honor of knowing and laughing with Connie before strokes and after while caring for him. He never lost his ability to make me laugh or blush. Connie was a man with a huge heart and I will always be thankful to him for letting my son work with him in the garden during summer breaks and "curing" him of his shyness with his outgoing ways. Connie will be truly missed by all. Best Wishes, Tina Berrios

I am so sorry to learn of your loss. I fondly remember the many celebrations we shared with cliff and esther. Connie was so much fun to tease. But then he was such an easy target. He always gave as good as he got. I know you are aware of Esther's passing yesterday. There has to be quite a reunion going on about now.

God bless your family.

Uncle Connie had nicknames for just about everyone, it seemed. I never saw him where he didn't call me 'Jillers Denise'. He always had a funny story to tell, and followed it with his head-thrown-back contagious laughter. We love Uncle Connie and will miss him... May he rest in peace.

My love and prayers go out to Aunt Jo, Todd and Lois, Tracy, and Terri and Rob.

Connie was my brother and I will miss him. Dave and Connie had a very good relationship and Dave just passed on 3 days after Connie as you know. So I am not sure I can bring myself to come to Connies funeral with Daves being so fresh in my mind and just 3 days later. But I will remember their many discussions on who the better football team was....49ers or Cowboys. Yes, I bet they are smoking their cigars and discussing that up in heaven as you said Tracy. I have to add GOOOO 49ers!!! That would be Daves thoughts to write if he were here. Many prayers and thoughts go out to Jo, Todd and Lois, Tracy, and Terri and Rob. You will see happier days soon I hope...and me too !! Luv all of you

Connie was one of my favorite uncles. I loved the Thanksgiving dinners at the farm house; listening to him tell old stories, tease us kids, and rant about the Dallas Cowboys. There was never a dull moment around him. He will be missed.

I got to meet Connie a number of times in the late 80's when my son started driving my old pick up truck. We were "regulars" for awhile & the repairs were always perfect. Connie & his techs kept that old truck going for me. He got to know that truck pretty well. I'd see Connie driving his classic truck around town & wonder how he was doing. My condolences to his family.Mark Gaunt
