Robert Bernstein Obituary

Robert M. Bernstein

Memphis, TN

Robert M. "Bob" Bernstein, 81, born March 4, 1935, in Chicago, IL passed away February 16, 2017. He was the son of Charles and Pauline Bernstein. He leaves his wife Sharon Rose (Messenger) Bernstein and his sister Trudy Vogel. He leaves daughters Jill Bernstein Zimbler and Heidi Bernstein Maroney, son Kevin Bernstein and his beloved grandchildren, Isabella Zimbler, Dylan Maroney and Eli and Ben Bernstein. He leaves behind numerous cousins, nephews and nieces all over the country and abroad.

Bob graduated from Senn High School in Chicago, IL and from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also served in the US Army. He moved to Memphis in 1971 and other than a few misguided years in Tulsa, OK and Margate, NJ called Memphis his home. He worked at the Memphis Jewish Community Center as Athletic Director in 1971 until receiving his Masters in Social Work in 1980. He worked at St. Joseph's Hospital for many years before opening his own business, Geriatric Consultants.

Bob's tenaciousness and drive to advocate for his clients, support his friends, without differentiating between the two. This often led to a lifetime connection that was reflected in his Kid's From the JCC, their grandparents, their parents , and their children over the years. He remained close to his St. Joe's family throughout Memphis as well.

Bob was involved in numerous charitable organizations inside and outside the Jewish community. He was a former Senior Vice President of the Board of Directors at Jewish Family Services, was deeply involved at the Professional Network on Aging and as a member in organizations and people far too numerous to list here.

Bob enjoyed being with his many friends with daily visits for breakfast and lunch at restaurants across the city. He was a confidant, mentor, friend and caregiver to everyone he knew. He had a great sense of humor and shared his love of life with everyone.

The funeral for Bob will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 19 in Beth Sholom Cemetery, Appling Road and Pate Road.

Donations in honor of Bob may be made in his memory to the organization the donor most associates with him.

Bob was one of my dearest St. Joseph friends. I will miss seeing him around town- especially Kroger's. He was someone I could always call on for advice when trying to help friends or family members. He always cared about others and will be so greatly missed by so many people. My prayers are with his family.

I worked with Bob at St Joseph Hospital in the 1980s, and I was fortunate enough to run into him multiple times over the years. Bob was caring, kind, warm, and funny. If you were in a hurricane, Bob could find a way to make you feel safe. He was a credit to his profession. Simply put, he was a good and decent man. I know he will be greatly missed.
