DAVID ATWELL Obituary

David Fullerton Atwell Ballston SpaDavid Fullerton Atwell of Ballston Spa, New York, died on Satur-day, January 7, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Rotterdam, New York, he served as a staff sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. After serving in the Army, he graduated from Paul Smith's College and SUNY Plattsburgh. He began a career in education at Washingtonville High School in Washingtonville, New York, where he taught history and social studies. He spent the rest of his career at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Junior High School as a teacher and administrator. He was a member and past president of the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Teachers Association. He retired in 1992. An outdoor enthusiast, Dave and his family spent summers at their lake cottage in the Adirondacks, a region he loved dearly. He pursued the sports he loved as long as possible and passed along these passions to his children and grandchildren. His sense of humor, intelligence, and love of history, nature, Vermont and reading continued throughout his entire life. An avid skier, he taught skiing at North Creek Ski Bowl, Hickory Ski Center, and after his retirement at Windham Mountain in the adaptive skiing program, and Gore Mountain. He was a board member and past president of the Schenectady Winter Sports Club, and a member of Professional Ski Instructors of America. He also served on the Board of Directors for Hickory Ski Center, and as ski school director. He was predeceased by his father, Ernest and mother, Myrtle (Fullerton) Atwell; and his sister, Charlotte Heinemann. A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan Bradt Atwell; his son, Scott (Kara Sweeney) of Bow, New Hampshire; his daughter, Heather Atwell of Keene, New Hampshire; and his brother, Charles Atwell of Rotterdam. He was the loving grandfather of Collin and Sean Atwell, whom he both adored. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 13th at the Wheeler Funeral Home, 25 Hyde Blvd., Ballston Spa . Burial will be in the Gerald B. H. Soloman Saratoga National Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Thursda,y January 12th from 5 to 7, or Friday from 10:30 to 11:30 preceding the funeral. Memorial contributions in Dave's honor may be made to The Community Hospice Foundation, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144, or to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, 811 W.
