A. J. Cacioppo

NEWPORT NEWS - A. J. 'Jim' Cacioppo, 79, passed away at James River Convalescent Center on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002. A native of Iowa, he had been a Peninsula resident for 56 years. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and retired from NASA. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. He was a long time volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and accompanied them to Homestead, Fla., after Hurricane Andrew and was also a longtime scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 48 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife, Audrey Downs Cacioppo; his son, Martin Cacioppo of Herndon; three daughters, Anne Cacioppo of Newport News, Toni C. Brown of Amherst and Nancy Munkasey of Wardensville, W.Va.; and five grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Burial will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Operation Smile, Gladstone Memorial Church in Gladstone, Va. or a charity of choice.
