Jacqueline Burroughs "Jackie" Tredennick

HAMPTON - Jacqueline "Jackie" Burroughs Tredennick, 87, passed away at her home on Grandview Island, Saturday, April 14, 2007. She is the widow of Col. John Cook Tredennick and mother of Steven Burroughs Tredennick of Round Rock, Texas; John Cook Tredennick Jr. of Denver, Colo.; and Elizabeth (Liz) Anne Burroughs Tredennick of Denver, Colo. Jackie was a graduate of Newport News High School and studied music at Hampton University. Jackie was raised in a family of 10 in Newport News' East End, where she showed her musical talent at an early age, singing in the church choir at 6 years old. She was given her own radio show on WGH radio at age 11, sang with area bands through high school and went on to perform in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and other cities. At age 21 she married "Tred", a young Army officer she met while singing at the Chamberlin Hotel. After a variety of military duty stations the couple retired to the Peninsula in 1962. Jackie used her talents to benefit Peninsula organizations, producing shows for the Hampton Lions Club, Hilton Village Junior Woman's Club, and others. In 1997 she started a music recording business, KoKo Productions. In her last years she often reminded people of her favorite philosophy by performing Sophie Tucker's "It's Never Too Late to Have a Little Fun" – and she had fun, right to the end. She is survived by her three children; daughters-in-law Diane and Page; grandchildren Steven and his wife, Stefni, Chris, Sarah, and Scott; and great-grandchildren Darian and Jaxon. She is also survived by one brother, Bobby Burroughs, sisters-in-law Ruth Burroughs, Jackie Burroughs and Vi Burroughs, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 20, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, 245 S. Armistead Ave. in Hampton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a favorite charity, especially performance arts organizations.
