Thelma Dye Obituary

Thelma J. Dye, 91, passed away at her home, April 23, 2018, after a second courageous battle with cancer. She leaves behind many loving family members and friends who are saddened by her passing, but who rejoice that her pain and suffering are no more. Thelma was born in the small coal mining town of Stonega, Va., December 1926. She was the youngest of 11 children born to Elbert T. and Sarah Street (Blankenship). She grew up in southwest Virginia where she met the man she would marry, Cleve Dye Jr. They eventually settled in Newport News, Va., where they raised three children, and celebrated 50 years of marriage until Cleve’s passing in 1999. Many people remember Thelma for her time spent (25 years) assisting her husband managing Denbigh Mobile Home Park in Newport News. She always took the time to know the tenants and to offer them assistance when needed any way she could. Some will remember the pride she took in her yard, brought to life by the many flowers and plants she meticulously cared for. And all remember her big heart and giving nature to insure no family member, loved one or friend was ever in need of anything. Thelma was predeceased by her parents and siblings, her husband Cleve, and daughter Sandra. She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Hensley (Donald) of Gloucester, son Cleve Dye III (Kelly) of Newport News, grandchildren Amy Brown (John) of Moyock, NC, Jim Kiser (Teresa) of Houston, Tx., Megan Richardson (Eric) of Newport News, Va., Barbara Galley of Sanger, Ca., 9 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren (with a third on the way.) The family would like to offer our heartfelt gratitude to Riverside Hospice Services for their assistance during this time. Specific thanks go out to Stephanie, Melissa and Sabrina for their love and caring they showed Thelma during each visit. You never failed to lift her spirits whenever she saw you and the caring she had for others extended to each of you. There will be a graveside service for Thelma on Saturday, April 28, 11 a.m., at Peninsula Memorial Park in the Garden of Wisdom. Arrangements are being handled by Altmeyer Funeral Home in Newport News. In lieu of flowers, per Thelma’s request, please consider a donation in her name to the National Cancer Institute.
