Carl Dudley Hewitt, Jr. Carl Dudley Hewitt, Jr. of Waverly, TN passed away Friday, February 6, 2004. He would have been 81 in March Born March 4, 1923 in Flat Rock, TN, his was a native Tennessean, son of the late Bobbie Walker and Carl D. Hewitt, Sr. of Nashville and Waverly. Mr. Hewitt was a 1941 graduate of Donelson High School in Nashville and a 1949 graduate of Vanderbilt University's College of Engineering. He began his career with the DuPont Company in 1941 at their rayon plant in Old Hickory, TN. His service with DuPont extended over a period of 58 years. In 1958, he was instrumental in starting the DuPont plant in New Johnsonville, TN, now the world's largest producer of titanium dioxide, a pigment used in paint and plastic. In 1975, he helped DuPont establish a plant in Tampico, Mexico and again in 1993, when DuPont decided to build a plant in Taiwan. In 1999, Mr. Hewitt was honored by the DuPont Company at their 200th anniversary celebration for being their longest tenured employee worldwide. It was especially noteworthy because he never missed a day of work during his 58 years with the company. He was an active member of the Waverly United Methodist Church and a U.S. Army veteran, who saw action in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII. Mr. Hewitt was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Byrd Hewitt; and daughter, Carol Lynn Hewitt. Survivors include his wife, Joe Ann Lampley Hewitt; son, Carl D. Hewitt III and his wife, Elaine, of Waverly; and daughters, Peggy Hewitt Black and her husband, Robert, of Chatham, MA and Cynthia Hewitt and her husband, Dan Holloway, of Yorklyn, DE. Also surviving is his stepdaughter, Danon Lampley Hooper and her husband, Bobby, of Waverly; 4 grandchildren, Jessica, Elizabeth and Wade Hewitt of Waverly and Will Hewitt Holloway of Yorklyn, DE; a brother, Burton Caldwell Hewitt of Hermitage, TN; a sister, Rachel Hewitt Cloyd of Donelson, TN; and 5 nieces and nephews. His remains are at the LUFF BOWEN FUNERAL HOME in Waverly, TN. Rev. David Spencer will conduct a funeral service at 10 am on Monday, February 9, at the Waverly United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville. Memorials in memory of Mr. Hewitt may be made to the building fund of Waverly United Methodist Church, PO Box 247, Waverly, TN 37185.
