Philip Harper Obituary

Harper, Philip R., 1926 - 2012, beloved friend, former actor, teacher, writer and world traveler, died peacefully after a long illness at his home in Little Compton, Rhode Island, February 9, 2012, at the age of 85. Philip Rathbun Harper was born in Denver, CO. His father, Heber R. Harper, was serving at that time as Chancellor of University of Denver. Phil enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served until the end of World War II aboard the USS Alabama. After the war on the GI Bill, Phil completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard College and later attended Harvard Law School. Phil worked as a schoolteacher and as a writer for Art World magazine. He studied acting with Sandra Seacat and performed onstage and in such films as Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters and Martin Scorsese's New York Stories, opposite Nick Nolte. Phil maintained a home in New York and traveled widely, cultivating his sense of adventure, his rich and varied friendships and his love of the visual and performing arts. He was an avid squash player and member of the Racquet and Tennis Club for over 50 years. Phil was a lifelong summer resident of Little Compton, as was his mother, the former Rachel Rathbun. Phil is survived by his spouse, Gregory DeJean; his niece Pam Bakal; his nephew Doug Brownlow; and four godchildren. His marriage to the former Jean Boyle ended in divorce. She and her two daughters, Ann and Mia Boyle also survived him. Phil's two younger brothers, David and Reese, predeceased him. A private memorial service will take place in Little Compton, RI, when the roses are in bloom. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hetrick-Martin Institute, 2 Astor Place, New York, NY 10003.

It was such a priviledge to know Phil these last few years. He was always so engaging and so erudite when we talked. My deepest sympathies go to Greg and the rest of his extended family. He will be missed by all of us.

We would like to extend our condolences at what must be a difficult time time. We will miss Phil's humor and wit which we had enjoyed for 25 years. At best a very unique individual who will leave a void. We will always remember the "remote". God Bless Phil.
