Dona West Obituary

Dona Irene West, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend, died peacefully in her sleep on August 17, 2023. She was born to Ezra and Irene Zina Miller on February 4, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dona was the youngest of 5 children.

After graduating from Granite High School in 1951, she married her soulmate, John Marcus West on September 4, 1951.

Dona's many interests included flower arranging, genealogy, knitting, baking, playing the piano and swimming in her beautiful Siesta Drive swimming pool.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she enjoyed giving service through a variety of church positions. Primary Pianist, Homemaking Leader, Visiting Teacher and singing in the Ward Choir were among her favorites. She enjoyed researching family histories for our family as well as anyone that enlisted her help to solve a" family mystery." Even after she moved to Legacy Village, she continued to give service by mending clothing for people or teaching others to knit or crochet. She said giving service brought her much joy.

She loved to get "dressed up" with a fashionista style including the perfect piece of jewelry to complete the "look". Her "homemade rolls" were a favorite of every child and adult at family meals and any neighbor was delighted to receive her English Toffee during the holiday season. Dona was always very sweet, a great listener and relished in receiving a compliment for a job well done. She was also never afraid to give you her opinion on any subject.

She is survived by her children, Marc Curtis West (KayeLynn) and Lisa Dene West, 7 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren. Preceded in death by her husband John (2007), son Chad (2021), parents and siblings.

Thank you to the many people at Legacy Village and Symbii Hospice for the care and support given to our mom during these past few months.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm on Friday, August 25, 2023 at the Sunset Larkin Gardens, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), Sandy, Utah. Friends and family may call at 12:30pm prior to the service. Flowers are welcome to be delivered to this location. Graveside services to follow at 2:00pm at the Sandy City Cemetery, 700 East 9000 South, Sandy, Utah.

We love you and we will miss you "Dona with one "N" …………..

I will miss you my dear friend and perfect example. I have enjoyed you at Legacy with your beautiful smile and cheerful demeanor. I enjoyed talking about our shared loves of horses, knitting, ZCMI and stories of your life and shared
memories of the Salt Lake City of our youth. I love and miss you.

Aloha,
We are sending all our Love today, to our sweet Aunt Dona, who was a very bright star in our lives! Though we live miles away We kept in touch we her via email or by phone and we always had such a delightful conversation. I never met Dona but wish I could have after marring her nephew (Bruce) in 1970. We just always lived so far apart. Dona and I had several things in common. We always talked about sewing or fashion or jewelry and music. I wish I would have been able to hear her play her piano. I imagine she played so well after that many years. We loved the same vintage jewelry designer (Miriam Haskell). I was a collector of vintage and we would talk about a lot of the designers from the 40´s 50´s & 60´s. We always had fun conversations. She would tell me old stories about her past and how her sister "Ora" would care for the children, while their mother (Irene) would tend to her health food store that she opened probably in the 40´s. My husband (Bruce), also worked in a health food store in the early 70´s on the island of Kauai. Dona loved talking to Bruce about health foods and all.
We were so sad to hear about her passing but so fortunate to know and love her! Thank You Dona, for the joy you added to our lives, from so far away!
Aloha,
Bruce & Susan Boucher

Dona had the best smile and a caring heart. She had so many talents and blessed us all by sharing those talents with those who were fortunate enough to have her as a neighbor and friend. Thanks for the memories! Scott & Suzi Hansen

Going to miss our visits, Dona. You gave us respite from the long journey when we moved from Illinois to SLC and constant support over the years. You saw a lot of grief and many successes. Lunches at Sweet Tomatoes were fun and sharing family history was inspiring. We will miss your happy attitude and smile.
