Harold Goddard Obituary

Harold Wright Goddard
1919 ~ 2013
Riverton, Utah-Harold was born in Salt Lake City on May 27, 1919, to Joshua Percy and Verna Wright Goddard. He passed away at age 94 on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Harold attended schools in Salt Lake City including East High School and the University of Utah. Married Gloria Cecile Manwaring on October 6, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. Prior to their marriage, Harold served a mission beginning in Australia and then transferring to the Northern States Mission as a result of war in the South Pacific. He served in the Navy during WWII. Harold had a lovely singing voice and was a member of the Tabernacle Choir. He joined and eventually owned the family business, Guthrie Bicycle Co., now in its fifth generation. Harold and Gloria met monthly for over 50 years with dear college friends as a "Study Group." He and his wife enjoyed a wonderful LDS mission in Nauvoo, Illinois. Harold loved flowers, sunsets, gardening, triple-crown-horse races, BYU football, and had a passion for healthy eating and sharing his insights with others. His family affectionately named their morning concoction of sprouts, brewer's yeast, papaya, etc. as "protein monotonous." He struggled with ill health for many years but outlived most of his peers.
Most importantly, Harold was a stalwart member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with a firm testimony and a great love for the Savior, the scriptures and the temple.
Survived by wife, Gloria; children David (Bonnie), Richard (Kathy), Janet (Ron) Johnson, Carol (John) Homer, Cherilyn and her fiancé, Rolynn Perri; 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Special thanks to Terry Selcho for her loving care of dad.
Funeral services will be held at noon, on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Riverton 16th Ward Chapel located at 1208 West 12400 South. There will be a viewing on Thursday evening, June 27, from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 So.) and also prior to the funeral from 11:00 - 11:45 at the church. Online condolences at www.jenkins-soffe.com

We have the pleasure of living in the home that Harold built in Holladay, and I also grew up in Emigration Canyon and knew the Goddards. I lovingly think of them as we enjoy the amazing apples, plums, peaches, apricots and blackberries they planted, and also as we plant our vegetables in the soil that they cultivated in the large garden at the side of the house. Thank you Harold and Gloria, and best wishes to their family on this anniversary.

Harold and Gloria were my neighbors for several years in St. George. We enjoyed them very much and still miss them. They were a great support when my husband Terry was ill and passed away. Harold was our home teacher for quite some time. Goodbye sweet man!

I knew Harold best many years ago when we both lived in Emigration Canyon. His sister Alice Ruth lived across the street from him and was a very good friend of mine. I learned much about faith and prayer as I witnessed her concern for his health. We were obviously in the same ward and so became pretty well acquainted. I looked up to and admired both he and Gloria greatly. He was a very sweet and friendly man with a beautiful voice and I'm certain will be sorely missed. My sincerest sympathies,

It has been along time since I helped Gloria with her figurines and knew the Goddards and the Manwarings, but I have very fond memories of those years and hope you are doing well.

What a great man! We were neighbors in Emigration Canyon (I'm Cal Christensen's daughter) and now we love living in the Goddard family home here on Naniloa Cir. I think of Harold and Gloria almost daily as we have the privilege of enjoying the home they built, eat the fruit from the trees they planted, and enjoy the wonderful gardening soil that they lovingly nurtured. We are thankful for the Goddards and send our love at this time.

P.S. Our garbage can still says "HG" and probably always will. :)

Harold Goddard had a great and positive influence in my young life. He kept me in the Gospel of Jesus Christ when I was floundering. I appreciated his insights and his kindness to me when I needed it most. I think he must be an angel already because of his complete love for our Savior. So very grateful for him and for the Goddard family.
