Douglas Moody Obituary

DOUGLAS KENT MOODY April 15, 1948 - December 15, 2005 The Bay Area lost one of its' most beloved and best known horseman this week when Doug Moody succumbed to a massive heart attack on December 15, 2005. Doug was born in Prairie City, OR, on April 15, 1948 and lived in John Day, OR until moving to Belmont, CA with his family in 1961. Doug learned to ride on his grandfather's ranch in John Day, instructed by his grandfather, Guy Boyer and his uncle, Don Boyer, both highly respected horsemen of the northwest. Doug's philiosophy of life was expressed in his favorite saying, "The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man." Doug graduated from Carlmont High School, where he won the John Philip Sousa award for band. He earned his BA in Political Science from Hayward State University where he was a member of Alpha Phi Omega and played percussion instruments in the band. Upon graduation, Doug served as controller for Lucca Food Manufacturing Company in South San Francisco for twenty years. He later acquired and operated the Green Truck Debris Box Service in Woodside. A truly great horseman, Doug's passion was cutting horses. He was twice Champion cutter at the Cow Palace's Grand National Horse Show. He won the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA) Classic Challenge in 2000, the PCCHA Non Pro Championship in 1997 and numerous other awards in cutting. At the Harris Ranch PCCHA Cutting, he won six out of seven classes. He won the Circuit Championship at Fort Klamath, OR by winning all five classes he entered and scoring 77. 80 is perfect! Doug was an active member of Los Viajeros Riding Club and the San Mateo County Horsemen's Association, where he was chosen as Horseman of the Year in 2000. He also was a long standing member of the Shack Riders and Mounted Patrol of San Mateo County. He headed the Ad Hoc Advisory Committee to the Jack Brook Horse Camp in La Honda. In addition, Doug was a member of the National Cutting Horse Association, Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and American Quarter Horse Association. Doug is survived by his mother, Jane Blondell; brother, Paul Moody and family of Canby, OR; brother, Harry Don Moody and family of Denver, CO; sister, Marla Anderson and family of WA and his wife of twenty-four years, Noel Moody of Palo Alto, CA. There will be a memorial service held Tuesday, December 20th, 6:00 p.m. at the Mt. Patrol Grounds, 521 Kings Mountain Rd., Woodside, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to: San Mateo County Parks & Recreation, Earmarked for Jack Brook Horse Camp in memory of Doug Moody. We have riden many miles of trails and sat by many campfires together in the last 30 years. You will always hold a special place in my heart with all the laughter you have given me. Remember the time at Point Reyes where you loaded the club bar on the tail gate of your pick-up and then our friend Gus sat on the tail gate with the cast on his broken leg? You decided to just hit the gas a little (ok! you hit it a lot)the bar came off the tail gate along with Gus. After we got the broken bottles picked up and broken Gus, We all had a great laugh over that. Then the time You, Bill and I had a little to much to drink and decided to go fishing by horse back. I thought it would be a great idea to try riding english and when I got on the horse I went completly over the other side. I thought you would explode with laughter after you realized I wasn't hurt. There are to many memories to recall but I will always remember that when you were around it would be a great time. You will always be with me on all my rides and I also know you are keeping track of me when I enter or leave Woodside area. Bear will miss you also and thanks you for talking me into buying him. Like the song say's "Good Ride Cowboy" See you on the other side. Love Norma

I first met Doug back in 1991 thru our mutual friend Clementine Carroll. Over the years Doug became a good friend. He was always willing to help when needed, I looked forward to his presence at our Los Viajeros rides and during the last several years Doug cared for my horse- feeding and cleaning Dixie daily. I could always count on him. His sweet and cheerful demeanor was always a lift to be around. One story he told me I would like to share with you. When Doug was first learning to ride at his grandfathers' ranch, he was riding a very headstrong mare that would come running back to the barn. His grandfather scolded him for letting her do that and told him never to let the mare do that again and to go back out and come back to the barn at a walk. Clearly worried about the consequences of returning to the ranch faster than at a walk, Doug outsmarted the mare. He made her walk BACKWARDS all the way back to the barn - much to the amasement of his grandfather. The next day the mare was sold. It was an honor knowing you Doug - your memory will forever remain in my heart. Love, Karin

I had the pleasure of meeting doug only a few years ago, when I joined the Los Viejeros Riding Club. My first ride out, Doug made me feel so welcome, with his teasing ways, especially because I was riding an Arab, but there was never any malicious comments, just good-hearted teasing. I began to look forward to him on the rides, as he and Noel had a way of making a newcomer feel welcome.

I, as will many others, miss him dearly.

Doug Moody rode into my life on a simple horse sale. We trusted each other immediately, even though we did not meet in person during that transaction. He later became one of the most important people in my life.

Doug was irrepressible, passionate about life, kind, gentle, and courageous. I never heard him complain, even when things went badly. He would always say “Stay strong, keep smiling”. He felt people like he felt his horses and he could hear the smile in your voice over the phone.

Doug was so generous with his support and the sharing of his feelings. He gave so much of himself. His gifts were never ending to those he loved. His encouragement was boundless and his strength of character huge!

We rode many miles together…usually laughing and joking as we went. He taught me so much. We covered a lot of ground, intellectually and emotionally. His Republicanism bumped up against my Berkeley liberalism and made for some interesting discussions. Our bond was deep and intimate, even in disagreement, like we had known and understood each other forever.

Missing him is constant and sorrowful. His heart may have been weak but it was as immense and beautiful as the sky! Like his favorite drink, Gentleman Jack, he was a true gentleman and the best man I’ve ever known. I will continue to love and cherish him forever.

It was such a wonderful service and I was so impressed with the mark Doug left on all our lives. He was my oldest cousin, (my Mom and Doug's Dad were brother and sister) and I can tell you that alot of what you saw in Doug was part of his upbringing. He had an incredibly loving and supportive family, and he shared those same ideals and values when he went out in the world. I would say from what I saw the other night, he was successful. There was a lot of love and joy for having known him, in that entire room. Thank you for sharing your love for Doug with all of us, especially his family.

I do not understand why the turely great ones are taken so soon, but oh the memories are so special to have. I did not have a chance to talk and say thanks to all on Tuesday night. Please write.

Bless you and happy trails.

I knew Doug for 16 years. He is the person who brought my husband, Dave, and I together 13 years ago. If it wasn't for him, we probably would have never met. Woodside will never be the same without Doug. WE WILL MISS YOU!!!

I have the highest possible regard for Doug and his horsemanship skills. I will always remember Doug with his great energy, enthusiasm, and loud, clear speaking voice at the past SMCHA meetings. He always contributed to the meetings with passion and at the same time with diplomacy. He was a wonderful, rare individual.

There are only a few people that you meet in your lifetime that will forever touch your heart and that is what Doug did to us.

Doug was truly an inspiration to all that had the honor to meet him and we will forever cherish his memory. He was a true friend to the equestrian community and his smile and kind words will truly be missed.

Our thoughts go out to Doug’s family and friends during this most difficult time.

A horseman known by all for his style and abilities handling animals and people.

It well be very difficult to replace someone of his stature and grace.

May the lord let him manage the heavenly pastures.
