James M. "Jim" Lau, 89, of Elkhart, passed away on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, at Hubbard Hill. He was born on April 17, 1934, in Elkhart to the late Walter and Martha (Marutz) Lau.
Jim was also preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn J. (Reed) Lau; brother, Robert Lau; and faithful canine companion, Sammy. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Mary (Linton) Lau; daughter, Monica Pletcher; granddaughter, Brooke (John) Barbara; great-grandchildren, Lauren and Kenley Barbara; stepchildren, Cathy (Dale) Snow, Leslie (Dan) Miller and Rhonda Linton; and many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Jim was the best husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa who enjoyed spoiling the girls in his family and making them feel special. He worked at Miles Laboratory as a supervisor for over 30 years before retiring and worked briefly as a handyman for ASA Electronics. During his earlier years, he was an avid tennis player in high school where he won the state championships with his team. In his spare time, he also enjoyed playing golf and was a talented piano player. Jim was a devout member of the Masons his entire life and took pride in his involvement in the Masonic brotherhood.
Jim had a witty side that was both playful and sarcastic. He was tender and protective of the women in his life and was the perfect example of a chivalrous man. For many summers, he and his wife, Mary, would camp out at Weko Beach where they met and would spend time with many of their friends. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and many friends.
Visitation will take place on Friday, Dec. 15, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart with a service to follow at 6 p.m. A private family graveside service will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Due to his love of animals, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to the Humane Society of Elkhart County, 54687 C.R. 19, Bristol, IN 46507.
