NANCY TRUITNER Obituary

Nancy passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, after a ten year battle with lung cancer. She was born on March 15, 1935, in Los Banos Ca., to Frederick and Thelma Fallis Sonke. The family moved to Fresno when she was in the primary grades. She went through the Fresno Public Schools, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1953 and Fresno State College in 1957. She became a first grade teacher at Centennial and then Roeding Schools in Fresno. She met James Truitner, of Fresno High, at Millbrook United Presbyterian Church. They were married there on June 13, 1962. They moved to the Bay Area, as Jim completed his studies at University of California. She taught first grade for five more years. After the birth of her second son, and as a stay-at-home mom, she became a den mother and then turned her attention to selling World Book and Avon products. She served as an Avon representative for more than 25 years, right up through the first few months of 2012. As her children matured, she began working as a teacher's aide and also in the school office. Never really pulling up her roots in Fresno, and having family in the area, she continued her relationship with the class of 1953. She attended reunions and occasionally dropped in on breakfasts put on by the 1953 women. She had many talents, including an uncanny memory for telephone numbers and for people's names and faces. She frequently could pick out, by name, mature persons whom she had known only as her students in the primary grades. A quiet person, she made close, long term friends easily. She was a member, for 40 years or more, in several organizations, including the AAUW, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her loving husband Jim; and by their sons, David Truitner and Douglas Truitner; and granddaughters, Anna and Sarah. Visitation will take place at Tinkler Funeral Chapel & Crematory from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, followed by interment at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church (Bay Area) celebrating her life at a date to be decided. Donations may be made to her church or to the American Lung Association.

As I’m preparing for Christmas and rearranging furniture, I sat down on my Mom’s formal floral couch for the first time in a long time. I immediately thought of growing up in the 80s and 90s and seeing my Mom and Nancy regularly sit on this very couch chatting away about Avon products, their families, town happenings, etc. They became good friends over the years and I remember Nancy fondly. She even gave me one of my first animal-sitting gigs feeding their sweet family cat Cocoa. Nancy was a lovely person. I’m sure when my Mom passed in 2017 they found a formal couch to catch up on again. For now we still have many of the Avon collectibles from Nancy to enjoy.

Nancy and I were friends from elementary grades. We lived one block apart on Madison Ave. Lots of good times with her and her sister Edith. Sure sorry and my best to Jim and family.

I was saddened to hear of Nancy's passing. I have known her for many years through our mutual association with Avon. Even throughout her battle with lung cancer, I never saw Nancy without a smile on her face and a very positive attitude. She will be missed. My condolences to her family.

Nancy, a good friend for over 28 years, is already missed a lot. She was a sweet lady, and I always enjoyed our chats and sharing laughs. My thoughts go to Jim and their sons at this sad time. - Kathy Hamre
