I just found out today that you passed away. It broke my heart. I took care of your mother for a few years. You were a warm hearted wonderful man. I will never forget you. Or your amazing smile. My prayers to your family. May angels watch over them.

I am Dave's sister, Judy. It is a year ago today that Louise called to tell me that Dave had died in his sleep. I saw him in Phoenix two months earlier and he looked and seemed great.
I have met a few anesthesiologists in Phoenix who knew Dave and spoke highly of him. Dave deserved the accolades.
Dave had a typical first-born personality. He was bright and had leadership tendencies, and yes, sometimes he could be a tad bossy! He also was my confidant at times. We communicated mostly by e-mail, and if a member of my family had a significant health issue, Dave would be one of the first to know, sometimes the only one outside of my household family and the appropriate medical folks.
I admire Dave's time management skills. He would get right onto a project and see it to completion.
Dave, we miss you. In our birth family, it is just Dick and me now. We are doing our best to continue the Paulus traits!
Remembering Louise, Eric, Matthew, and Lizzie.
Love, Judy

My best memories of UF and Shands are walking the halls with you, Dave, and talking about the things we could do, should do, for other people. I am so glad to have caught up with you a few months ago, and yet so sad that I did not take up your gracious offer to bring my boys over to once again pick oranges in your back yard. What a wonderful man you are Dave. You, my friend, are no doubt in a better place, a place made for souls like you who always put others first. I will miss you. My sincerest condolences to your family.

Louise,
Dianne and I were saddened to hear of the death of David. Even though we never met him, we felt like we knew him because we had heard so much about him. You and your family will be in our prayers as you deal with this difficult situation. It is our prayer that The Lord will give you a Peace that passes all understanding. May God richly bless you during this time.

I once asked Dr. Paulus his view of the human body and he replied "it's like an onion that has so many layers we may never fully get to the core to truly appreciate". What a great perspective. I will miss your gentle nature.

I recall with great fondness his stopping by my office looking a snack that i kept in my well-stocked overheard bin. He always had a smile on his face, and, he had a kind word for everyone he met during the day.

During my years with the Shands Clinical Engineering department, you were my mentor and friend. Your incredible knowledge, your warm caring personality, your seemingly unlimited patience, and above all, your love for life, left an impression on everyone you met. You were a very great man and will be missed by all who were blessed by knowing you. May your family take comfort in knowing that you touched so many lives in such a positive way.

Although I only met Dr. Paulus a couple of times, I admired his gentle way and wry sense of humor. My wish is that memories of good times spent enjoying family, friends and with love and laughter, will help to esae the loss of an obviously great man, friend and doctor.

I can't imagine the world of transplant at Shands without Dave Paulus. Ever a teacher, mentor, caregiver and gentleman. I will never forget his tender and caring nature- not only with me as his patient, but with every transplant patient I had the privilege of sharing with him.

We were next-door neighbors to the Pauluses when they first settled in South Idylwild. Our older daughter Anne often sat for Erik and Matthew while they lived there and even after. Lizzie was born after they moved away, and we seldom saw them after that. But they were good neighbors. Our condolences and best wishes to all the family. We know the hole in your hearts will never be filled.

I will never forget how Dave took my young daughter Sara into the operating room at Shands holding her in his arms and giving her a complete tour of the entire operating room area and putting her at total ease. He was our, and her, guardian angel on that day. His huge smile, laugh and good nature will be missed by those that knew him. It was an honor to be able to call this man "friend".
