MILDRED HILL-LUBIN Obituary

HILL-LUBIN, MILDRED
Mildred began her teaching career at Paine College in 1962, the height of the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Arts Movement, which followed. This cultural and political landscape offered her a rich life-changing, engaging, and courageous foundation. In addition to teaching the traditional undergraduate and English classes, from 1968-70, she taught composition and served as the Director of federally supported in-service institutes. Mildred Anderson Hill-Lubin, the oldest of the seven children of the late Luther and Mary B. Anderson was born March 23, 1933 in Russell County, Alabama. She grew up in Phenix City, Alabama and the family moved to Columbus, Georgia on V-J Day, September 2, 1945.

In preparation for these institutes, Mildred also began to study African American Literature which had not been a part of her English studies and was introduced to African Literature in English. These programs also were to help to assist in preparing teachers for the De-segregation of schools. She remained at Paine College until 1972, a year which proved to be pivotal: she was named a Dan forth Scholar, received an award for her first trip to Africa and a fellowship to enroll at the University of Illinois.

I remember Mildred Hill-Lubin in two special ways. On the night when she became president, the outgoing president of the ALA, identified her as the new Mother of the African Literature Association. She responded bravely that, yes, I am a mother but I am also a Professor and an Administrator. The second is that when I became director of African-New World Studies at Florida International University and had our first conference, Mildred walked in, regally, elegantly dressed as usual, with her son who lived in Miami, and said she had to be in attendance to make sure I knew that she recognized my presence in the area and to offer her support. Mildred set an example of looking good always, being always well-cordinated and elegant, and presenting her academic work to the ALA and above all, maintaining a politics that represented the interests of our communities at the highest level of her possibility. When she retired, she told me that she would not attend any conferences before and that she was finished with that aspect of her work. It seems she devoted all the rest of her time to community projects and advancing her Gainesville community. I will miss you Mildred Hill Lubin. You set an amazing example for us who follow.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of one of the greatest women I have ever met. Her grace, intellectual abilities, and caring personality were unique and humbling. God has definitely called a great soldier to join His army. Definitely one of His generals. She will be missed.

I am sorry that Dr. Hill-Lubin has passed. She was dignified, sophisticated, worldly and welcoming. I am so happy that I visited her on Wednesday and was able to talk to her. She had a big smile on her face almost the whole time we talked. I and the Pleasant Street Historic Society will miss her wisdom and wise council. She is irreplaceable to us all.
