Curtis Bartlett Obituary

Curtis Allen Bartlett, 32, of Galax, Va., lived inspired while on earth and graduated to his most fulfilling adventure and assignment on Thursday, March 9, 2017.
Bartlett was born Aug. 17, 1984, in Danville, Ky., to William Samuel Bartlett Jr. and Velinda Margaret Jalo Bartlett.
In addition to his parents, Sam and Linda Bartlett of Galax, Va., he is survived by his paternal grandparents, Bill and Nell Bartlett of Galax, Va.; maternal grandparents, Jack and Claudia Jalo of Galax, Va.; sisters and brother-in-law, Bethany and George Lakomy of Bolton, Mass., Faith Bartlett of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Victoria Bartlett of Galax, Va.; brother, Caleb Bartlett of Galax, Va.; nieces, Emma Lakomy and Carter Claire Lakomy; girlfriend, Aimee van Dartel; and Tyco, his beloved service dog.
Curtis served in the Army during the Iraq war, had several tours as part of an emergency response team at the U.S. Embassy in Bagdad as a private contractor and more recently came back home to serve as a deputy for the Carroll County Sheriff's Department.
He was also an elite athlete serving as a Brand Ambassador for RSP Nutrition.
Curtis impacted lives locally and around the world with thousands of followers on social media who watched his almost daily videos on physical training, tactical gear and sometimes just his outrageously funny adventures. Many of his posts attracted several million views.
Curtis loved his family and friends and never met a stranger. He loved music and played professionally as a drummer before entering the military.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Sam Bartlett and Todd Shaw officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. at First Baptist.
The Bartlett family is grateful for the love and support of their church family, the community, their law enforcement family and the family at RSP Nutrition.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Curtis can be made to First Baptist Church or to Police Fitness.
Curtis believed that health, strength and fitness were vital to his duties as a law enforcement officer, and his mission was to take this message around the world.
The purpose of Police Fitness will be to honor Curtis' legacy by providing training, education and supplementation to police officers through a series of initiatives in Curtis' honor. Donations to Police Fitness can be made via check to Police Fitness and mailed to 1024 E Stuart Drive, Galax, Va. 24333 or made online at www.rspnutrition.com/policefitness.

There is no one on this earth and never will be anyone like Curtis. I knew him for almost 10 years and he touched the lives of everyone he met. He never met a stranger and you never saw him without a smile on his face. We have all suffered a great loss with his passing but will cherish every moment, memory, smile and laugh we shared.

Curtis has been and forever will be an inspiration to me. His work out videos and overall attitude made working out more fun while learning new techniques. He is one of those angels walking the earth, touching lives and making all around him better. My deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends and all those lives like mine he touched. He will be forever missed but his memory and hard work will live on forever.

There is not a word to explain or to convey the feelings I have for the family. My deepest sympathies to the parents and the family. I will say that if given the choice you choose the pain; I assure you this much you are not alone. We all feel the pain maybe not on the level as a parent, but as a friend in a very unique brotherhood that many will never know. I know Cutis from the BLET class he attended in Statesville, NC. Upon graduation he brought some steaks he was so proud of and rightfully so! I still feel those where the best I have had, and can still recall the conversation we had about how his father has a cow farm. You could see the pride in his eyes from you guys and I see it in my mind as if it was just yesterday. No one will ever "get over it" but we ALL will learn to live in a world with one less hero. Curtis was just that and in MANY ways!

To the entire Bartlett family, I'm so sorry for your loss. On Friday night my roommate told me that Curtis had been in a crash. When I checked out his Facebook page I could not believe all of the posts that he had past. Curtis was an amazing person, so much energy & full of life. His crazy workout routines & amazing strength motivated a lot of people in & out of the fitness community. I'm a NPC nationally qualified bodybuilder & used several of Curtis's crazy workout ideas to improve my workouts. We communicated several times about some of his posts on Facebook & Instagram, whether in the gym or @ a playground he could always come up with some kind of workout routine. Both of us also shared a love for the breed Belgium Malinois, he had Triger & now Tyco, I also have 2, Kino & Keila, he had great advise for training & what breeders/trainers were good. One of the first on line posts I saw from Curtis was a clip of him doing pull ups with the assistance of a younger guy with a taser gun aimed @ his butt, all in good fun. Mom playing trumpet back up to the Star Spangle Baner of the 4th of July, to funny!
My heart goes out to your entire family for this tragic loss...rest in peace Curtis, you will truly be missed but not forgotten!

Though I do not know your family personally, I feel your pain as my son died 5 years ago of diabetic complications. Once the shock is over and you go through the grief process, memories will get you through along with the loving arms of God. There will always be a hole in your heart, your life won't be the same, but you will learn to live with it. May God give you peace!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I worked in Baghdad and was stationed at the same base as Curtis, an amazing man that many of us were incredibly fortunate to have known. What made Curtis such a great person was his ability to make anyone he met feel special and appreciated. His smile and laughter was infectious and you could not be anything but upbeat when in his company. Curtis' passion for physical fitness was bar none and those of us who had a chance to work out with him or have him train us was in for an unforgettable session, mostly because we just prayed that it would end and that we would be able to walk afterwards. He held us accountable and I can tell you from personal experience that his approval meant the world to us; he made you a better version of yourself. He was genuine, not only as a mentor but as a person and a friend. Curtis was true inspiration that few people ever really get a glimpse of in a lifetime, but are incredibly blessed if given the opportunity. Heaven has gained an angel and the world has lost an amazing individual. God speed, prayers of comfort to your loved ones, rest easy my friend, until we meet again.

I was the Regional Security Officer that oversaw the Emergency Response Teams in Iraq during Curtis' last year there in 2016. As his supervisor, he was an inspiration to me and a credit to our security forces there. He kept messing with me to work out with him and I finally did. I thought I was in good shape until I started working out with him and he was certainly something to behold. Yet, he had this engaging personality that made it enjoyable to spend time with him. We developed a great relationship and I looked forward to seeing him several times each week during our workouts. When I received the news of his passing, it bothered me to my core to know that such an inspirational individual has departed from us. In a truly positive way, he affected all of us in Iraq and I will miss him, yet I'm sure I'll see him again someday. Last, I pray for healing for his family and friends because, if it's like anything I experienced in my year of knowing him, I can only imagine the effect he's had on those with whom he's had long-term relationships.
