Betty Jean Johnson

BURLINGTON - Betty Jean Johnson, 90, of Burlington, formerly of Keokuk, died at 6:45 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 25, 2008) at Great River Medical Center's Klein Unit in Burlington.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk with Pastor Jim Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Keokuk.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services Monday at the funeral home.
Betty was born on March 9, 1918, in Des Moines, the daughter of Rev. Lloyd and Ada Blanche McCoy Ellis. She married Howard Lee Johnson on Aug. 25, 1939, in Des Moines. He preceded her in death on May 20, 2000.
Betty had attended Chariton Junior College and nurses training at Iowa Methodist Hospital. She moved to Keokuk in 1940, and then moved to Burlington in 2001.
She was a homemaker and also helped her husband in the operation of their drugstore.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Keokuk, had taught Sunday school, and was very active in the church. She had been a member and past president of Newcomers Club in Keokuk and had helped organize the club. She had been a Den Mother for Cub Scouts.
She enjoyed reading, painting, playing the organ and making quilts. She also made wood carved Christmas ornaments.
She is survived by three children, David Eric Johnson and his wife Doris, of Burlington, Christine Wallace and her husband James, of Iowa and Paul B. Johnson of Henderson, Kan.; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Irene Fuller of Chariton.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Mark Emil Johnson in infancy and Philip George Johnson on July 30, 1992; a step-granddaughter and a sister, Helen Wissler.
