Joy DECICCO Obituary

DECICCO, Joy V. Joy Virginia Decicco, 80 years of age, passed away on August 24, 2010 after an eight month battle with cancer. She was born in Mount Vernon, NY on July 12, 1930. She attended Mount Vernon schools before attending Briarcliff College. She then was employed by the Time and Life Corporation in New York City. She married Michael Decicco in 1949 and the couple located in Connecticut where Michael was employed. They resided in Wethersfield, Ct where their three sons, Gary (deceased August 24, 2008), Glen, and Douglas were born, raised, and schooled. The couple moved to Avon, Ct in 1978, and eventually to Atlantis, FL in 2005. Joy was always active in community affairs, including serving as president and secretary of parent teacher associations while her children were in school, participating in community theater, and was a volunteer ambulance driver in Wethersfield. She loved entertaining and cooking, and was an enthusiastic participant in physical activities particularly tennis and skiing. She also became a registered exercise instructor, teaching classes for young and senior residents in the towns of Farmington and Avon, CT for 19 years. As a result of that endeavor she accumulated many devoted and loving friends who had attended her classes, and continued to stay in touch with her even after her move to Florida. She has been loved, and will be missed by all of them as well as her family. In addition to her husband and two sons Joy is survived by her granddaughter Ashley, a daughter-in-law Cindy, and five nieces, Jane, Judy, Tricia, Nancy, Abby, and Nell. A mass will be held in her memory at the Saint Ann Catholic Church, West Avon Rd. Avon, CT on September 16, at 10 AM. All friends of Joy are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, anyone wishing to make a donation in her memory should make it to the American Cancer Society, or Hospice of Palm Beach County, or to his or her favorite charity. (There will be a place for family and friends to gather after the mass).

You wouldn't think that after all these years since growing up next to Joy and her family, 40+ (yikes!), that I would feel such a feeling of loss at seeing the announcement in the paper. I can only begin to imagine what her family is feeling now. She had that effect on people... once you met Joy, she became a part of your life, a part of your heart. God bless her in her new peaceful home, and bless her family in their grief. Love.

Mike, our deepest condolences to you and your family on Joy's passing. You both have been such good friends for many years. We will always remember the good times we have enjoyed together on the ski slopes and in other activities. We are so glad we had the opportunity to again spend time together in Florida in recent years, and during your stop over visit with us on your way to Connecticut. Joy will alway remain in our thoughts and she will truely be missed.

Joy was a wonderful, caring neighbor. I missed her when she moved from Avon to Florida.

My heart goes out to her loving family.

Dear Decicco Family,

What a "joy" your beloved Joy was to those who knew her. My neighbors and I took her evening aerobics classes for years and we came to love her dearly. She advised us about women's health issues and her favorite expression, "keep your cup half full and never half empty" has helped me through many of life's challenges.

You family is in my prayers and thoughts.
