Marc Lerner Obituary

SGT Marc Lerner, 30, of Federal Way, WA, passed away on July 31, 2012. He was born in Athens, TX on May 29, 1982 and was raised by his parents Lynn and Barrie Lerner in South Florida. Marc graduated from Piper High School in 2000. He was married to Michelle Lerner on August 4, 2008 in Fulton County, GA. Marc joined the Army on February 21, 2006 from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Throughout his 15 month deployment he was a medic for D Co 3rd Plt 1-15. He went to SFAS in October 2008 and was selected to begin the SFQC. He graduated the course as an Indonesian speaking Special Forces Medical Sergeant. He was then stationed at Joint Base Lewis McChord where he served with 1SFG(A) 2nd BN C Co ODA 1232. He made life fun for all those around him with his quick wit, his easy smile, and his great sense of humor. He did some amazing things in life, and he surely would have done many more if he had more time on this Earth. He loved his family and was a great husband, son, brother, uncle, and nephew. He was also a great friend. He will be missed by all. Marc requested that if monetary contributions are sent in his memory, they should be sent to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. I taught both Marc and Phoenix how to play chess when both were about age 7. They ended up playing each other twenty years later. I was happy to give Marc the marble chess set he learned to play on. And even more pleased to learn that it had become one of his prized possessions. Marc was very generous in return. Giving me possessions I know meant a great deal to him personally. Marc was a very loving, sensitive and gentle human being. Touching so many people. I am so sorry that such a valuable life has ended prematurely. My prayers go out to all. I love you, Marc.

Marc was the first kid I met in high school. I came into town from Hollywood and didn't know anyone. I sat down in photography class, first period, and that's where i met my best friend through high school. We skated together, got to know each other, got jobs together at a movie theater. I taught him how to play the guitar and after only a couple months he surpassed everything I had learned over four years. That's just how he was, brilliant at everything, so smart, capable, and talented. We ended being in a punk band that was well received, and he played bass guitar in the most popular band in school. Marc branched off into the most amazing things, and I was always so proud of the career he led, the music he wrote, and the friend he was. He affectionately called me Duffy and people still do fourteen years later. He will always be a part of my life.

Marc was the kindest most accepting person you could only hope to be. He was crazy funny and always there for anyone in a crunch. There are so many pictures that show that classic smile. My thoughts and prays are with his family and close friends. I knew Marc through school and out of school. He is missed and I know most of south Florida stands quiet in memories. We all love you so very much Marc.

Marc was a true friend and his passing is a loss to everyone he encountered. He was so intelligent, vivacious, and full of life. Without fail, Marc was always contributing to the team, and giving of himself. Whenever there was a task to be accomplished or work needed to be done, Marc was the first to lift a hand with a smile and his quick wit. I have often bragged that Marc had the personality that I want from teammates and I try to duplicate myself.
See you on the high ground Buddy, you are missed.

Dear Barrie and Lynn and the Lerner Family,
On behalf of the everyone at JAFCO we are so very sorry for your loss. We were shocked and saddened to learn of Marc's passing and cannot even begin to imagine the enormity of your grief. Even as a child Marc had a special quality that touched everyone who was lucky enough to meet him. We would like to dedicate a brick at the JAFCO Children's Village to Marc to allow his spirit to live on forever and watch over abused and neglected children in our community. Marc always showed compassion to the hundreds of children who were protected in the Lerner home during the years that they served as a foster family in our community. It was so fitting for Marc to follow the example of service provided to him by his parents and proudly serve our country. There is no way to make sense of his untimely death but each of us can make a commitment today in loving memory of Marc to do our part to be of service to those in need.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
With deepest sympathy,
Sarah Franco, executive director

We had the joy knowing Marc when his wife Michelle were our neighbors in Atlanta. He was such a wonderful person and we so enjoyed spending time with him and Michelle. We miss wondering what Marc was going to grow in their garden each year...sun flowers and even pumpkins. We are so saddened to hear that he passed away. Dan and I are sending much love and many prayers to the entire family.
