Herbert Fliger Obituary

March 20, 1930 - August 7, 2017 Herbert W. Fliger, 87, passed into the presence of his Heavenly Father in Everett, WA, his home for 45 years. Born to Louis and Nellie Fliger of New Hampton, IA, Herb was one of nine children. Herb attended New Hampton schools, spent sunny summer days at the community pool and along with his siblings, helped out at the family business, Fliger Bakery. As he grew, he built model airplanes, and shared many hunting and fishing expeditions with his Pop and brothers. Herb married the love of his life, Enola Daddow, during a blizzard on November 21, 1956. During their 60 year marriage, Herb and Enola modeled love, patience, honesty and hard work, nurturing their growing and close-knit family. Herb and Enola shared many hobbies such as breeding tropical fish, gardening, and creating paintings which grace the homes of many family members. When their grandchildren were young, many happy days were spent throwing rocks in the water at Mukilteo Beach, picnicking at Kayak Point and exploring Fort Casey. Herb and Enola were faithful members of First United Methodist Church of Everett for several decades. Herb served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force, during the Korean War. Many tales were told of the deathly hot and humid weather during basic training at Lackland AFB in "San Antone", TX and on base in Montgomery, AL. Herb was a printer for 53 years, beginning his career in New Hampton, IA. After his military discharge, Herb resumed his printing career at the Charles City Press (Iowa), and then worked 10 years at The Missoulian (MT) while he and Enola raised their young family. Drawn to the beauty of the Puget Sound area and a new job at The Herald, Herb and Enola moved their family to Everett in 1972. Herb retired from The Herald in 1998, after 26 years of service. Herb was an avid student of history, particularly of ancient civilizations, the American Old West, and WWII aircraft. He spent many fulfilling days fishing the rivers and hiking and hunting in the mountains of Western Montana. Herb loved cross country car trips; anytime anyone was heading out on vacation, he always got the itch to travel, too! Herb is survived by his wife, Enola; sister, Jeananne (Marland) Johnson of Laurel, MT; daughter, Alise (John) Schmitt of Marysville, WA; son, Louis (Paula) of Snohomish, WA; grandsons, Christopher, Jeffrey, Kyle (Debra), and Gregory Schmitt; granddaughters, Alicia (Galen) Wallace and Jordan (Clark) Raymond; as well as great-grandchildren Jack and Rebecca Schmitt and Hudson Wallace. Herb also leaves special sisters-in-law, Sibyl Roberson Fliger and Norma Daddow Ries, as well as many dear nieces and nephews. Herb was preceded in death by his son, Matthew; his parents; his brothers, Louis, Russell, Alfred, Manley, Floyd and Roger; and infant sister, Joan. Please join us for a Celebration of Herb's Life, Saturday, August 26, 2017, 2:00 p.m. at Mountain View Presbyterian Church, 5115 100th Street NE, Marysville, WA 98270. My condolences to the Fliger family. You guys are among my parents, Don and Delores Peterson, most dearest friends. You changed my life, as we followed you here from Missoula Montana. Here I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest, had a wonderful career at Boeing, and raised a beautiful family. Thank you for the memories of hunting in Missoula, sitting on the "hump" between Herb and my dad in Herb's willies jeep. How I loved to witness the interaction between the two great men as they discussed their loves and interests of life. Both my dad and I shared Herbs love of firearms and was always pleased to run into him at a gun show. Herb now joins my dad in the "great composing room in the sky".

I count myself lucky to have worked with Herb at The Herald starting in 1987. I remember him as a gentleman of the first order -- he never had a bad word to say about anyone. I always enjoyed his wry sense of humor, too! My condolences to his family. I know you've lost a special man.

Louis, I never knew your Dad. But I certainly remember how nice you were & also a great photographer. I still have the picture of us (with Ed & Betty Morrow) for the new Everett Museum hanging on my wall. You did your Dad proud and am so sorry for your loss.

What a wonderful life Herb enjoyed while on this earth! I know he has left many wonderful memories for his family and I know he will be missed very much. I was pleasantly surprised when Herb included me on his emails of jokes and interesting historical tidbits. I always enjoyed his emails and was pleased he chose to include me. I enjoyed his and Enola's visits to the farm and the interest Herb took in the alpacas. I will miss him.
