Raymond Campbell Obituary

Ray Campbell, 85, of Marysville, died December 26, 2013. Ray was born July 29, 1928 in Marysville, WA. He married Ruby Cole on June 28, 1949. Ray and Ruby opened Campbell's Drive-In in 1959, and Ray's Drive-In in 1962. They enjoyed watching Ray's become an Everett icon throughout the years while it was passed down through the generations. The couple spent their winters down in Arizona, and came up to spend summers with their family in Everett. They also enjoyed traveling and took many extended trips around the world. He was an avid garage saler and coupon clipper, always going the extra mile to pinch a penny and find a bargain. Ray is preceded in death by his mother and father; four siblings; wife, Ruby; and son, Dick. He is survived by his daughters, Debbie Campbell (Jeff Hegland), and Robyn (Nick) Roth; sister, Maryanne Hines; Robert Cole and Audrey Hunter; grandchildren, Jeff Doleshel, Scott Doleshel, Katie (Lindsay) Diamond, and their father, Steve Doleshel, Amy (Jaycen) Roth-Boober, and Casey Roth; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Abby Doleshel, Josie and Nathan Boober; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ray will be dearly missed. He was a man of intention: life did not happen to him, he happened to life. Memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Everett. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your local food bank would be greatly appreciated.

Many childhood memories of Uncle Ray!

January 26, 2014

January 26, 2014
Ray, Ruby, Debbie, Robyn and Dick became a second family to me and Ray's Drive-In became my home away from home. My parents, Guy and Cleone Pratt aka Pratt's Food Distributing, had known Ray and Ruby and their children and their family business for many years. I first met Ray and Ruby when I was a young girl. Whenever our family was going camping or fishing, we always stopped at Ray and Ruby's first drive-in on the highway between Marysville and Everett for lunch with a delicious milkshake and to most probably drop off some supplies which I would help my father deliver to Ray and Ruby.
As soon as I turned 16 and got my Food Handler's Permit I started working at Ray's Drive-In on Broadway in Everett. As others have said, Ray most definitely was an outstanding businessman and educator. After working at Ray's Drive-In I worked at Penny's, the Bon, ECC Library, in an architect's office and eventually I became a teacher. Every one of my supervisors would ask me how I learned to be such a dedicated employee. Every time I would tell them all about working for Ray Campbell at Ray's Drive-In. Ray was just like Donald Trump; he taught and expected a true and honest work ethic which was worth its weight in gold. Ray always made certain we understood how his expectations (like one napkin per customer and the importance of quality food and supplies) were connected to the drive-in's success. He also taught all of us about excellent customer service and how to make every customer feel like the most important person at the drive-in; the customer was always our number one concern. Ray was also a stickler about cleanliness, neatness and efficiency also like Donald Trump. Ray's Drive-In became our drive-in; a food service business which we were all so very proud of. As others have said, we always became good friends with the people we worked with. We were all so proud of each other and our work. Ray definitely taught us about being a team, interpersonal skills and respecting each other. Leadership, loyalty, selflessness and commitment to the organization and each other were also concepts which Ray instilled in all of us. Obviously Ray's family members are also blessed with these business skills and talents as evidenced by Ray's Drive-In's continued success.

I will always remember Ray's true friendship, trust, respect, leadership, smile and his commitment to Ruby and their children. Ray and Ruby and their children hold a very special place in my heart. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so sorry I wasn't able to attend Ray's memorial service on January 16. I've been sick in bed with bronchitis, pneumonia and now atypical pneumonia since December 26. Wishing each of you my love and prayers.

I have such fond memories of Ray and Ruby and my first job at Ray's. Even after 50 years, the life lessons still apply. I will remember his work ethic, fairness, grin and twinkle in his eye. It was a pleasure to know you Ray!! RIP

When I was 12 I worked across the street from Campbell's Drive in and spent my lunch money there. A couple of years later I was delivering Ray's daily newspaper. Today I'll drive across the valley when I crave a good burger and shake.

Fond memories of uncle Ray. I remember a family trip across Stevens Pass to visit friends in Eastern washington when I was (maybe) 8 years old. My mom was petrified when she found out I was riding in Uncle Rays car... I had a great time. First time I had traveled that fast. I will miss you greatly Uncle Ray

Oh what great memories our family has eating at Ray's
He and his family were neighbors of ours. They raised lovely children.

I recall the girls coming to our home for birthday parties
we held for our boys.

Ray and Ruby not only did good in business but also raising good kids.

He will be missed.

Much of what I know about business I learned from Ray Campbell. Ray's was one of my first jobs and I still make all the president's head go the same way on the dollars bills and would never give anyone more than one napkin! That was 50 years ago and the Campbell family have remained friends all these years. Ray and Ruby hold a fond place in my heart. Prayers to the family from the Lamoureux's.

I'm sure going to miss cousin Ray. I learned how to be thrifty and conservative from him. Kind of runs in the family! Ray ran a very successful drive-in on Broadway. Appears he trained his family well to carry on the quality, successful drive-in it is today with good business management. We shall continue to stop at Ray's Drive-in for fish-n-chips. The best!

Thank you to Ray and his family for all the evenings of fish and chips watching the sunset on Port Gardner Bay - years of memories and they always included the great food from Ray's. God bless and keep you Mr. Campbell.

Thank you Ray for hiring a very shy girl with no experience. I worked at Rays during 1963 and 1964. Muriel Timboe (Puckett)
