Sara Otis Capshaw Starnes, 94, of Granite Falls, went to her heavenly home Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021.

Born March 18, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Lanys Gavin Capshaw and Bertha Jeannette Hoke Capshaw. She was preceded by her husband of 65 years, Ray C. Starnes; son, Allen Ray Starnes; sister, Louise Martin; and brother, Thomas Capshaw.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Celia and Tom Furr of Wilkesboro, and Sally and George Burdette of Greenville, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Edgar and Marilyn Starnes of Granite Falls; nine grandchildren, Adam Furr and wife, Jennifer, Emily Furr Hogan and husband, Matt, George Burdette III and wife, Rebecca, Jonathan Burdette and wife, Margaret, Caroline Burdette Martin and husband, Bob IV, Mary Catherine Starnes Clark and husband, Justin, Kristin Livingston Taylor and husband, Jay, Clint Starnes and wife, Cari, Kelly Starnes Young and husband, Chris; 19 great-grandchildren, Wesley and Joshua Furr, William Hogan, Parker, Darby, Jay, Charlie, Hadley and Larkin Burdette, Emmeline Martin, Hunter Rogers, Jay Jr. and Noah Taylor, Carson Skipper, Cooper, Corbin, Carleigh, and Carter Starnes and Alaina Harris; and two sisters, Phyllis Shook of Michigan and Carolyn Poindexter of East Bend.

Sara was an active member of Poovey's Grove Baptist Church in Granite Falls, where she was the director of the Primary Children's Sunday school department for over 30 years. In addition to Sunday school, she was Director of the Women's Mission Union, Training Union teacher, GA leader, Vacation Bible School teacher, and choir member. Her passion was for missions and she was a tireless advocate of the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for foreign missions and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering for Home missions. In later years she joined the First Baptist Church of Hickory, where she continued to serve as a Sunday school teacher and WMU Director. Sara started working in a beauty salon while in high school after the untimely death of her father. After graduating from Granite Falls High School, she attended cosmetology school in Salisbury where she became a licensed beautician. She continued in this line of work until starting a family. Raising her four children became her life's vocation. In addition to her church work, she was an active member of the Poovey's Grove Home Demonstration Club and served for years as a Grade Mother for each of her children at Granite Falls Elementary School. Sara loved to entertain and always welcomed guests into her home. No one ever left her house hungry. If she saw someone in need, she tried to meet the need as best as she could. She loved the Lord with all her heart and sought to serve Him by using the talents and resources of a homemaker for His glory.

The family will receive friends at Poovey's Grove Baptist Church, Highway 321 in Granite Falls, beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, before the 11 a.m., funeral, with burial in the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lottie Moon Christmas Offering through your local Southern Baptist Church or, imb.org/generosity/give now; or to Salvation Army, 4370 Hickory Blvd., Granite Falls, NC 28630 or salvationarmyusa.org.
