Charles McDonald Obituary

Charles E. McDonald Jr.
1951-2021
After courageously battling Cushing's disease for 18 months, Charles Edward McDonald Jr. left us to be with our Heavenly Father on June 13, 2021. Charlie was born in Lubbock, Texas to the late Charles E. McDonald Sr. and Arlene Patterson McDonald on December 1, 1951. He was raised in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Westbury High School. He attended the University of Houston where he earned a BBA and became a lifelong Cougar fan.
Charlie loved the Lord and modeled his faith through his unconditional generosity and kindness. He was a proud father, grandfather, and devoted husband. He loved his career, watching sports, playing Goofy Golf with his family, and Canasta with his friends.
Charles is survived by his wife Nancy Shey McDonald, eldest daughter Elaine and her husband James Petralli; daughter Lindsey and her husband Daniel McKinney; and son Andrew and his wife Annie. The pride of his life, grandchildren, June Petralli, Sam Petralli, Georgia McDonald, and one on the way "Baby Girl" McKinney. His sister Janice Hall, her husband Charlie, and nephew Stephen Clarke.
Charlie loved the city of Houston and lived within the same 3-mile radius for 68 years of his life. He spent his childhood years surfing the Galveston beaches, drawing and painting, and listening to local garage bands. After graduating from U of H, he became a CPA and his business travels took him to an extended stay in Iran. Upon returning to Houston, Charlie met the love of his life Nancy Shey of San Antonio, Texas and they were married in 1980. Charlie served 20 years as the Vice President of The Methodist Hospital in Houston. After which he became a consultant and then worked for Harris County. During this time he and Nancy were blessed with three beautiful children.
Charlie and Nancy recently built the home of their dreams, trading the hustle and bustle of Houston for the peaceful tranquility of Bastrop. They moved in December 2020, and although Charlie spent most of that time in the hospital in Austin. The few times he was at home, he was able to enjoy the tranquil life of the birds and deer and feel the quiet presence of God. A true final gift. For us all, his spirit will always be felt when we visit. Thank you, God, for a life well-lived.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to donate to the Cushing Support & Research Foundation.

Nancy and children, I wish to extend my sympathy and condolences, I had been looking for Charlie for several years, and today Talking with Mike Tabor he informed me of Charlies passing. The last time I talked to him was 24 or 25 years ago when one of the girls was at SFA
after I saw an article on him in the paper , it had been 15 years or so since we spoke, and it was like it was yesterday. I'm so sorry for y'all loss Charlie was a fantastic friend, roommate, and outstanding citizen . I'm so sorry we grew up and apart and that I moved away from Houston and so many friends.

It is difficult to lose a fellow "Cushie" - I hope Mr. McDonald would not mind being associated with that silly name but there is a community of us out here who feel this loss, every Cushie we've lost too soon due to Cushing's, and will work that much harder to ensure that things are different for future patients.

Mr. McDonald sounds like he lived his life to the fullest, I may not have known him personally but this description of his life makes me smile. I'm so sorry you have all lost such a solidly wonderful family member and friend.

I always admired Charlie’s quiet competence while we both worked at Methodist Hospital. Once while we were waiting for a meeting to begin, Charlie looked deeply pensive so I asked him what he was thinking about. He said that he was thinking about his newborn daughter. It was a dear and kind admission, especially coming from someone with Charlie’s financial and quantitative acumen. He was a wonderful person and obviously a loving father. I know you miss him. I hope your memories can sustain you during such a sad time.
