Gene Humphrey Obituary

Gene Earl Humphrey
1946-2017
Gene Earl Humphrey went home to be with the Lord on Monday, the 13th of February 2017. Gene Humphrey was born in Deport, Texas on the 29th of December 1946, to Earl and Joyce Humphrey. From East Texas, the family moved west to Odessa where 10-year-old Gene was born again at the Eisenhower Church of Christ. Here he participated with a group of young men preaching God's word and served as an example to the younger boys. The family moved again to Lake Charles, Louisiana and then on to Clarksville, Texas, where the extended members of the Humphrey family lived. Gene graduated from Clarksville High School in 1965. During the years when his father was away from home working in the Gulf of Mexico, Gene served as the head of the family for his mother, brother and sister.
After serving his country in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1971, Gene returned to Austin and completed his BBA in Accounting at the University of Texas. He then moved to Houston where he met his future wife, Diana Davidson. They attended Westbury Church of Christ where they were married, and Gene focused on adult education and benevolence as a Deacon. It was during this time their daughter, Allison Brooke, was born.
Gene then moved his family to Palo Alto, California where he obtained an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1982. Following graduation, Gene and his family briefly moved to New York City where they worshipped at the Manhattan Church of Christ, and then they moved to Dallas where he was an adult teacher at Prestoncrest Church of Christ.
Another move brought the family back to Houston where their son, Clayton Douglas, was born. The family attended West University Church of Christ where Gene and his wife mentored young couples and hosted a monthly meal and Bible study in their home. While worshiping here, he taught adult Bible classes and became an Elder in 1995.
From 2002 until the present, the family worshiped at Memorial Church of Christ where Gene and his wife helped start and mentor a class for newly married couples. The class grew from an original membership of three couples to now over sixty. Gene became an Elder at Memorial on September 10, 2004. He was also a member of the Building Committee for the recently completed Education Facility and Chapel.
Gene was a radio announcer in high school and college, a Certified Public Accountant and an executive in numerous high profile companies. In retirement, he focused on volunteer work and briefly became a speculative homebuilder. One of his greatest joys was being Pops to his three grandsons, Joshua, Jacob and Caleb.
Gene was on the Boards of Theater Under the Stars, the Editing Company, MD Anderson Chaplaincy Fund, the Southern Africa Bible College and Oklahoma Christian University. He and his wife served on the Development Board of Lifeline Chaplaincy.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Diana; daughter, Allison and her husband, Brian, and their three sons, Joshua, Jacob and Caleb Davidson; son, Clayton; his father, Earl Humphrey; his brother, Wayne (Sally); sister, Marlene (John), and numerous nephews and nieces and their children. His mother, Joyce, preceded him in death.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until eight o'clock this evening, Thursday, the 16th of February, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service is to be conducted at half-past one o'clock in the afternoon on Friday, the 17th of February, in the chapel of Memorial Church of Christ, 900 Echo Lane in Houston, where David Duncan, Minister, is to officiate.
The interment will follow, via an escorted cortege, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed towards Lifeline Chaplaincy, 1415 Southmore Blvd., Houston, TX 77004

Dearest Diana, Allison, and precious Clayton,
I am so saddened to see you lost Gene and your Dad. He was really wonderful. So kind, smart and handsome too. I believe you lost him too early. Diana I sadly lost you when we had to move away, and I have never forgotten your beauty and love. How completely grand Allison had some grandchildren that must have brought ridiculous joy to Gene. I cannot believe he is gone. Hugs.

Though I did not know Mr. Humphrey he sounds like a wonderful gentleman! I too am a Longhorn graduate of UT in Austin and a member of Fifth Ward Church of Christ. God's blessings to the family...

We are so saddened to learn of your loss. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are never prepared to give up those we love, but it is so much easier, when the one we must give up has dedicated his every breath to serving God. And we know, if we follow God's will for man as Gene strove to do, then Heaven awaits. May you find peace in the knowledge that he did live to have that heavenly home. May God give you strength as you face the world without your beloved husband, father, son, and brother. Our love and sympathy to all of you.....our dear friends and Christian family. The Gadison family send heart-felt condolences and prayers all the way from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Gene will always be remembered for his tireless service and enduring love. I can still see him standing in the foyer each Sunday morning with both hand and heart opened wide to greet all who entered in. He was a true visual example of a man after God's own heart. He will be greatly missed, but always remembered.

Sherree and I are broken hearted about Gene's passing. We reconnected last year when we came to Houston for my cancer treatment. He was a Godsend. He picked up our daughter at the airport, even putting his plans on hold. He invited us to church for worship and took us out for lunch. Gene was a true servant of God and will be missed dearly.

So very sorry. May God fill you and your family with his perfect peace as you try to continue life without Gene. He alone can keep us in perfect peace when our world falls apart. May you know how much influence Gene has brought to many and how loved you are, even by those who are friends from long past. Love you.
