John Kampine Obituary

Kampine, Dr. John P. Dr. John Paul Kampine, age 82, passed away on October 14, 2016 surrounded by loving members of his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Susan (Kustermann) and his children; Mary (Bill) Schmidt, Dr. John (Stephanie) Kampine, Margaret (Mike) Talbot, William (Andrea) Kampine and Heather Kampine. He is further survived by his cherished grandchildren Ian, Cullen and Tea Kampine; Alex, Grace and Tess Talbot; Eli and Benjamin Kampine; Jack and Olivia Kampine. Survivors include his siblings Patricia (Paul) Wenninger, Robert (Sue) Kampine and Eileen Thompson. Also lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Peter J. Kampine, his sister Mary Ellen Dorzeski, and his parents Clifford Kampine and Florence Kampine Saltz. John Kampine was raised in Marathon, Wisconsin where his father was a general practitioner and his mother was a registered nurse. He graduated as valedictorian of his high school class where he was a Wisconsin All-state football player and high school All-American. He attended the University of Notre Dame and Marquette University on football scholarships. In 1958, he married Susie and they started a family in 1959. He received his medical degree from Marquette University Medical College (now the Medical College of Wisconsin) in 1961. He returned to graduate school at Marquette where he received a Ph.D. in Physiology, then continued research training as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He returned to Milwaukee to complete a residency program in Anesthesiology in 1967. To his family, he was husband, father, brother, son, uncle and Grandpa, but to his peers, he was a healer, a scholar, and a scientist. During his residency, he taught in the physiology department that led to a life-long dedication to teaching. He was a faculty member in both the Anesthesiology and Physiology departments at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Under his guidance, he developed the careers of more than 5,000 medical students, approximately 1,000 residents and fellows and served as an advisor for eight doctoral candidates. Dr. Kampine was the associate chief of staff for research at the Milwaukee Veterans Administration Center where he championed an aggressive research effort culminating in developing new technology and publishing hundreds of original articles and investigations. His primary research interests were cardiovascular regulation during anesthesia and he co-authored the widely read textbook for medical and other health professional students entitled "Circulatory Physiology: the Essentials." In 1979, he was named chairman of the Anesthesia Department at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Kampine was president of the Society of Academic Anesthesia Chairmen, president of the Association of University Anesthesiologists, president of the American Heart Association (Wisconsin affiliate) and chairman of the Circulation Group of the American Physiological Society. He was named to the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and received the Award for Excellence in Research by the American Society of Anesthesiologists in 1992. Dr. Kampine was unanimously elected as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons & Anesthetists, Ireland. The Medical College honored him as the Alumnus of the Year in 1998 and the college established an endowed chair of anesthesia in his name in 1996. Medicine was his career, but his family was his greatest joy. He spent many years watching his children compete in sports and supporting their musical interests. His home was the hub of extended family celebrations populated by generations of relatives on both sides of the family. Visiting physicians and researchers from other countries were folded into the family and you simply pulled another chair up to the dinner table. As the family grew with marriages and grandchildren, the warmth and hospitality of the Kampine homes in Wisconsin and Florida extended to many. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, October 28th from 4 to 7 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Brookfield (1755 N. Calhoun Rd.) at 10 AM on Saturday, October 29, followed by graveside services at St. Joseph Cemetery, Waukesha. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Department of Anesthesia Research fund at the Medical College of Wisconsin, (Office of Development, 8701 Watertown Plank Rd., Wauwatosa, WI 53226.)

Our deepest sympathy to you Susie and family for your great loss.

John, you will always be remembered for your love and concern for people, especially for us who had the privilege to work with you and see your vision for our department and research program you built. When we were young in our careers, you were like a father to us, always positive and encouraging. My family and I are very grateful for all the time, care and advice you have provided thru the many years. You have a wonderful wife and family and have left a truly great legacy. We have been Blessed!

Dr. Kampine created more than a clinical research departmenthe created a culture. The departmental coffee, the pig roasts in his garage, the informal gab sessions in the break room, spontaneous visits to individual labs, and the laughter. He encouraged collaboration, and would not tolerate noncooperation. He sought out the best and encouraged them. He apologized. He stated his opinion honestly. He asked questions at seminars, which he often attended. Knowing John Kampine was a blessing in my life I will never forget.

Dr. John Kampine and Susie were our wonderful next door neighbors in Brookfield from 1986 until they sold their home on Tilton Lane. Friendly, generous, a lover of the flowers he nurtured and we enjoyed, a home that was open to family, interns from the Medical College and friends. We were blessed to know John and to have John and Susie in the neighborhood and community. Our daughters were blessed to be able to watch their home when he and Susie traveled. John Kampine was a testimony of commitment to his family, his work, his home and his community. We are thankful to have known him. Bernie & Mary Hertel and family

When I was a resident in Boston completing a cardiac anesthesia rotation, we had a visiting professor from Milwaukee. His name was Dr. John Kampine. I had a great conversation with him and he was the major reason for me to come to Milwaukee after residency. Dr. Kampine and I spent a lot of time taking care of cardiac anesthesia in the early 1970s at the Milwaukee County General Hospital. It was truly memorable and enjoyable to work with him. His voice was still strong when I talked to him just a year ago. Several months ago I didn't get a response to my email, however and instead his son replied. I deeply regret losing the opportunity to visit him once more. He will remain in my memory and prayers. Our deepest sympathies go out to Susie and the Kampine family.

Thank you Dr. Kampine.

Nothing you love is lost. Not really. Things, peoplethey always go away sooner or later. You can't hold them anymore than you can hold moonlight. But if they've touched you, if they're inside you, then they're still yours. The only things you ever really have are the ones you hold inside your heart.

My deepest sympathy to Susie and family for your loss. We'll all remember Dr. Kampine as a great man! He always treated everyone as a guest no matter what initials we had after our names. When he came over to the labs he remembered all of us and what our interests were. He had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He helped so many people see their potential.
A bit of him lives on in the many he's touched down here.
A loss for us but an important promotion upwards for John.
God Bless.

Dear Susie and Family,
Yes we have lost John but there really aren't enough superlatives to recognize his past. John was My best and closest friend for many years both at the bridge table and the Physiology labs. We closely shared both during our pursuit of doctoral degrees and he was both an outstanding scholar and a warm friendly person. I learned a lot from him and with him. We can all be happy and proud to have shared some part of our lives with Doctor Kampine.. He was "Seven no trump" in everything he did.

Dear Mrs. Kampine and Family,

We are deeply saddened by the news of Dr. Kampine's passing away. We met him when we first came to the US from Croatia in 1998 to be postdoctoral fellows at the Department of Anesthesiology. We still remember his sincere, welcoming and warm smile. He continuously supported and encouraged us over the next 3 years. Without Dr. Kampine our proverbial "American Dream" would not be possible, and we will forever keep him in our best memories.

Please accept our deepest condolences,

John and Stephanie...and family --my heart goes out to you. John Sr. recruited me for the MCW position I still hold. He was a great man of class, tradition and wisdom--above all he was compassionate and supportive of family/career balance. We all will miss him deeply.
