John Ver Wey Obituary
The youngest of five children, John was born July 11, 1930 to Bert and Anne (Brandsma) Ver Wey in Inwood, IA. Along with his brother Richard and sisters Susan, Anna Mae and Berniece he was raised on a nearby farm. He never forgot his Dutch farming heritage; a well-manicured lawn and well-kept garden were always important. After graduating from Inwood High School in 1948 John enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed at Ellsworth near Rapid City. It was during his active service that he met Evelyn Olawsky on a blind date. Their courtship quickly turned into an engagement and marriage followed by a move to Sioux Falls where they established their long life together and started their family. Soon they became charter members of Hope Lutheran Church which became a centerpiece for their family.
After marriage John joined Crescent Electric Supply where he proudly worked for the next 38 years. As their family grew to include three children, John designed and helped build their new home. Summers were filled with baseball and family vacations to Big Stone Lake and the Black Hills. He never liked the cold winters but that didn't stop him from barbqueing throughout the year. After retirement there was nothing Mom and Dad liked better than travel especially if it meant a drive to visit grandchildren. A member of the Elks and American Legion he demanded honesty, expected cooperation and treated all with respect.
John is survived by a son Jeff (Theresa) of Seattle, daughter Lisa Wilson of Roanoke, VA and son Paul (Marian) of Davis, CA along with six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
We will celebrate Dad's life with a private memorial service to be held at Hope Lutheran Church on Friday, March 11, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. followed by internment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls.

My husband and I have lived across the street from John's son Jeff and his wife Theresa since 1989, so we've had many opportunities to meet John and Evelyn when they visited. We had the delightful benefit of getting to share in the jokes John would often email to his family! They were both a delight to meet when they would visit our neighborhood. We already miss them, much as we miss our own family members who have moved on. You are in our hearts forever. With love to the whole Verwey clan.

To the Ver Wey "kids"--Due to a doctor's appointment, we will be unable to zoom in to the memorial service this afternoon. But we want you to know that we are certainly thinking about all of you as you celebrate you dad's life. He was a wonderful neighbor for many years. We couldn't have asked for better neighbors than he and your mom. Our Riverdale area was a perfect place for so many of us to raise our families. God bless you as you remember your dad and mom and as you rejoice in their being together for eternity.
