Vivian Jones Obituary

JONES Vivian Taylor, 96, a long-time resident of Lexington, passed away on Feb 25, 2011, in Minneapolis, MN, where she lived for the past 12 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther C. Jones; her parents Paschal and Mollie Taylor; two sisters, Louellen and Mildred; and two brothers, Arliss and Wayne. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Jones, of Minneapolis, and her partner, Victoria Van Slyke; her sister and brother-in-law, Effie and Bill Strong of Rockport, TX; many nieces and nephews; her dear friend Darla Baker; and her beloved Granddog, Gracie, who brought her great joy. For many years, Vivian was a teacher in the Fayette County Schools, where she taught fourth grade at Glendover Elementary. Earlier in her career, following her 1935 graduation from Berea College, she was a teacher in Corbin, KY, her hometown, and in Oak Ridge, TN, where she met her husband, also an educator for many years in the Fayette County Schools. She was a crossword puzzle and Scrabble whiz who loved music and poetry and, most of all, dearly loved her family, for whom she provided an example of a life well lived. Visitation at 12pm on Tue, March 1, followed by a service at 1:30pm at W.R. Milward - Southland. Interment immediately following at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens. www.milwardfuneral.com Linda Jones & Victoria Van Slyke October 14, 2006 St. Paul, MN

I have several memories of Vivian that I will cherish; her beaming smile at Linda and Victoria's wedding and her absolute "take no prisoners" approach to Scrabble with her word graphs bringing in huge number scores, vanquishing other players with her skill, wit and grace. She was a lovely, intelligent and kind woman and I feel lucky to have known her.
