Howard Judd Obituary

JUDD, M.D. , Howard Lund
died at home on July 19 surrounded by his loving family with his hands in ours. Howard grew up in Los Feliz and enrolled at Occidental College; it was an important time in his life when he pledged Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity where he formed dear, enduring friendships that he so treasured. Howard went on a two-year mission for the Mormon Church; he then attended Brigham Young University and was accepted at George Washington University School of Medicine on the basis of three years' college work.
He interned at Los Angeles County Hospital and that year married Susan Russell. They moved to Boston where Howard completed a four-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Boston Lying-In Hospital at Harvard Medical School, followed by a two-year fellowship in Endocrinology at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Howard was recruited to join the founding faculty in the Department of OB-GYN at the new UCSD School of Medicine; after seven years he was recruited to the Department of OB-GYN at the UCLA School of Medicine where he achieved a tenured professorship until he retired as Emeritus Faculty. During his career he served as Chief of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at both Cedars-Sinai and UCLA Medical Center, prior to assuming the Chair at Oliveview-UCLA Medical Center and being a Vice Chair in the Department at UCLA. Howard was nationally and internationally recognized for his research in women's health, and was a Principal Investigator on the Women's Health Initiative, a ground-breaking ten-year study of hormone replacement therapy.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of forty-three years, Susan; his beloved daughters Hilary, Wendy (Gabriel) Brenner, and Leslie (Joshua) Hamilton; his two adored granddaughters Emmeline and Katie; and his brother Lewis L. Judd, M.D. of La Jolla. Our family wishes to extend our deepest appreciation to Jeffrey Mariano, M.D., for his superb care of Howard; Dr. Mariano exemplifies a true physician in his dedication to his patients.
A memorial service will be held at the UCLA Faculty Center on Saturday, August 18th at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, we suggest donations to the "Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Fund," Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 10833 Le Conte Avenue, Box 951740, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1740 and made payable to the Regents of UC.
We will forever miss his integrity, judgment, sense of humor, advice and counsel, and his deep love for us.

On this day, 5/16/2021, the 23rd anniversary of the still birth of my first child, a son, at UCLA Medical Center, my thoughts are with you in the loss of Dr Judd fourteen years ago.

I was the Lead Nutritionist for the Women’s Health Initiative Study at UCLA at that time. My first visitor after my unexpected loss during delivery, was Dr Judd, who opened his heart to me in my time of need. For that, he will always hold a special place in MY heart. Continue to rest easy Dr Judd.

Dr. Judd has left an incredible legacy - from both his work and his family. I was truly honored to work with Howard on the Women's Health Initiative. His integrity was unsurpassed. He will be missed but never forgotten. I send my prayers for peace to all who love him and miss him. Sincerely, Pam Cate
