Loren Lipson Obituary

February 22, 1944 - September 27, 2018 On September 27, 2018, Dr. Loren G. Lipson passed away peacefully at his home in S. Pasadena, California. Loren was born on February 22, 1944, in Los Angeles, California, to his parents Dr. Morris and Janice Lipson. Loren received his Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Summa Cum Laude, from University of California, Los Angeles, in 1965, his MD from Johns Hopkins Medical School, in 1971, followed by two years of research at the National Institutes of Health where he specialized in the field of endocrinology. In 1975, the National Institutes of Health honored Loren with a National Service Award in recognition of his work in diabetes. After further serving as a research fellow and teacher at Harvard Medical School, Loren returned home to teach at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine, where he was Chief of Geriatric Medicine until his retirement in 2006. Loren continued to teach at the University of Alaska and Claremont Graduate University. Loren had an abiding interest in the care of the elderly, and was instrumental in drafting regulations for nursing homes adopted by a number of states. Loren was a highly respected forensic witness specializing in the standards for nursing homes and assistant care facilities, testifying throughout the country. The United States Department of Justice and the California Attorney General's office would seek out Loren's advice, and respected Loren for the depth of his knowledge and for the integrity of his professional opinions. Loren cared deeply for the plight of the disadvantaged including the Japanese Americans interned during WWII, the Alaskan natives who lacked medical care, the prejudice directed to Mexican Americans, and the plight of Native Americans living in poverty on reservations. In the last decade of his life, Loren's mission was to purchase American Indian art, from collectable antique pottery to the art of living master ceramicists, and to donate the pieces to museums, so that the public at large would be aware of the great talent of the artists and the beauty of their creations. Along the way, Loren acquired an interest in a number of contemporary artists to whom he was also a generous benefactor. It is hard to quantify the extent of Loren's mission, except to say that by the time his life's journey had ended he had donated over a thousand pieces of art which are now on display in over forty museums. Through all these pursuits, Loren's unique personality shined through. To say that Loren was eccentric would be an understatement. Anyone who met Loren would say affectionately that there was no one quite like him. Loren had a prodigious memory for the countless people he met throughout his life, recalling their names and their family histories. Loren was a great teller of stories, and he could recount with both humor and wisdom quirky facts about history, science, and the arts. To sum up his life in his own words, Loren would have said, "Wasn't that wild?" Loren is survived by three sons, Keith A. Lipson (Katy), Kyle A. Lipson (Genevieve, granddaughter Marlowe), Kurt A. Lipson (Jean), and Kiki L. Schlosberg (Phillip). A memorial service will be held for Loren at the Autry Museum of the American West on October 15, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. Donations to Loren's memory may be made to the Loren G. Lipson Scholarship Fund, Institute of American Indian Arts at www.iaia.edu/philanthropy or mailed to 83 Avan Nu Po Road, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87508.

I just now learned about my dear friend's untimely death. I am extraordinarily sad. Loren, apart from my sweet wife, was as good a friend as I've ever had. We were very close in high school. I spent many warm hours at Loren's home in Encino. His parents and Kiki were like family to me. Loren had a heart of gold and an extraordinary mind. My heart goes out to every person who mourns his passing, especially Kiki.

Loren and I were friends in high school. Though we occasionally saw each other at UCLA, we had not stayed in touch, but I have thought of him often. I remember Loren as truly kind, warm, and generous in his friendship. Loren was a sweet kid; he had only good to say about others.

We learned about Dr. Lipson in 2016 when we received images of the Dr. Loren G. Lipson Contemporary Native American Ceramics Gift to the Crocker Museum, Sacramento, California. The initial gift can be searched in a Collection Search' for the Crocker Museum on www.themarksproject.org. We know these beautiful objects are just a fraction of his rare legacy of collecting art of the peoples he championed as gifts to build museum collections. Through his gifts to regional museums across the country Dr. Lipson has made it possible for children and adults to see, experience and understand the beauty of these Contemporary Native American and other indigenous artists and their art traditions today and into the future.

We mourn the passing of a visionary, Dr. Loren G. Lipson.

THE star of every party!

Your sons are such a wonderful tribute to a life well lived. They are your greatest gift to the world and you gave so many gifts in so many ways. You taught us all that a pateint's dignity is so very important. I will never forget that.

I met Loren a few short years ago when I was a curator at the ASU Art Museum in Tempe, Arizona. He was a fierce advocate for the indigenous and LatinX artists in our collector, and helped us add other pieces from artists that he loved. Every visit from Loren was a whirlwind. I'll never forget the limitless kindness that lurked just below his sometimes crusty demeanor. There will never be another like him.

I knew Dr. Lipson as a member of the Western Art Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum. Though his visits were not frequent, each one made a distinct memory. His generosity to our art world is remembered each time I walk through the museum. And his loving nature will be remembered always.

A wonderful human...passionate about people, life, art, culture and education. Dr. Lipson had a profound impact on my Ph.D. and the perspectives he provided shaped my academics. Quick with a quip that would surely make one smile, I will be forever grateful for knowing Dr. Lipson.

I've known Dr. Lipson for at least 10 years. I work at a printshop and he'd come in almost every week to get documents notarized. The documents was always affidavits. Essentially, along with these documents he would fly around the country and serve as expert witness against nursing homes that were abusing the ederly in their care. This guy was a hero.
He would also sometimes make color copies of Native Indian art that he was purchasing and I believe, donate them. He had razor wit and I never saw him down or sad or angry. He'll be missed.

Dr. Lipson was a true champion for the elderly and for the vulnerable in our society. He was a wonderful, delightful, brilliant, fascinating person. He will be greatly missed by so many. I will miss visiting with him and working with him.

I knew Dr. Lipson on a professional level. I deposed him when I represented a nursing home several years ago, then I hired him (based upon how well he did in the deposition) when I represented victims of nursing home malpractice later on. He was, indeed, a character. I found him to be very intelligent, very fair, and somewhat demanding. He wanted to be prepared, and he cared about the cases he was involved in. Even though I only had a handful of cases with Dr. Lipson, he told me all about his interest in the arts and the various artists he supported. He will be missed.

I got the opportunity to speak briefly with Dr. Lipson a couple of times per week when he would call in to speak with our attorneys. What a lovely man! I could literally see him smiling through the phone! I'm quite sure that he will be missed by many! R.I.P. xo
