Delbert Hawkins Obituary

Delbert A. Hawkins, 94 of Las Cruces, NM went to be with his heavenly father on December 16, 2010. He was born on June 21, 1916 in Stratford, Oklahoma to Comador Aldee and Armer Hawkins. In 1923 the Hawkins family moved by covered wagon to Mt. Park, Oklahoma. Years later in 1936, after he graduated from High School, he moved to Roswell, NM where he met his wife to be, Winnie Mae Elder. Delbert proudly served his country In the United States Army during World War II. After the Army, Delbert worked in the auto-parts business in Las Cruces from 1945-1988 owning Western Cars Parts. He enjoyed playing golf, swimming and spending time with his extended family at University Church of Christ. Delbert's pride and joy were his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Hawkins will be deeply missed by all his family and friends who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his sons Larry Hawkins and wife Kay of Las Cruces and Terry Hawkins and wife Roxa of Fairbanks, sisters, Almeta Tally of Broken Arrow, OK, Wanda Lewis of Grand Prairie, TX. Delbert is also survived by his grandchildren Luke and wife Shauna, Seth Hawkins, Mimi and husband Dan Morris, Kellie and husband Bobby Cullen; great-grandchildren Paige and Kaleigh Morris and Sydney Hawkins and many nieces and nephews. His wife of 67 years Winnie Mae preceded him in death. Also preceding him are two sisters, Wauneta Walters and Frankie Bell, a brother Neil "Spud" Hawkins.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Monday December 20, 2010 at Getz Funeral Home. Funeral Services are at 2:00 PM on Tuesday December 21, 2010 at University Church of Christ with his grandsons-in-law Bobby Cullen and Dan Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Dear Hawkins Family,
While having lost such beautiful people this year, how fortunate to have had them with us for so long. While growing smaller, enough of the original "Oklahoma gang" is still around to remember those good old times when we all got together at Polly and C. A's humble abode in Snyder for the holidays. Uncle Delbert was always the relative we all gravitated towards. It is one thing to see the good in others and quite another to have the gift of bringing the good out in others. Uncle Delbert had that gift and the world is a much better place for it. With loving thoughts and our condolences--your Oklahoma cousins.

Larry & Teri, I am truly sorry to read about Delbert. He was such a wonderful person. Many of my fondest memories of growing up take me back to Western Car Parts, when we would all hang around the store drinking cokes with peanuts in them. (Of course we had borrowed the keys from their secret hiding place with your dad's blessing). Hanging out on Saturdays mornings helping with the inventory reading the numbers to your dad on the hand tools because he said he couldn’t read them, and then crossing the street for milk shakes. Your dad always made us feel like we were part of his family, and we were. It was such a joy a couple of months ago when I got to see Delbert with Larry going in Furr’s, and I was able to introduce two of my kids to him, and tell them about how he had treated us and Grandpa Camooch so wonderful thru the years. He was the still the same loving Delbert. May God continue to bless your families as he so blessed your DAD!

Mr. Larry Hawkins and family, I am sorry about the passing of your loved one. I did not know him well but I spent many of my younger days learning from Larry Hawkins and I'm sure he inherited his tremendous character from Delbert Hawkins.
