Dencil Thornton Obituary

Dencil Ray Thornton May 28, 1935 Ð January 15, 2004 COLUMBUS, GA - Dencil Ray Thornton, 68, of Columbus, died Thursday, Jan. 15, at Doctors Hospital. Funeral services with military honors will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the East Side Assembly of God Church on Miller Road, with the Rev. Ben Cotton and the Rev. James Strickland officiating, according to Vance-Brooks Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Riverdale Cemetery. Mr. Thornton was born May 28, 1935, son of the late George Windon Thornton and Mary Myrtle Thornton. Mr. Thornton served his country during the Korean conflict and during the Vietnam War. He retired from the United States Army and was a driver for Independent Cab Company. Mr. Thornton was a member of the American Legion. He is preceded in death by his brother George Thornton and son Millard Gregory Locke. Survivors include his wife, Hazel Thornton of Columbus; two daughters, Sharon Juliene Chandler of Columbus and Lucrecia Ann Lyles of Columbus; a son, James Edward Locke Jr., of Columbus; a sister, Nancy Ellen Craig of Leon, W.Va.; three brothers, Leroy Thornton and Carl Edward Thornton, both of Leon, W.Va., Paul Raymond Thornton of Wilmington, Ohio; five grandchildren, Charles Ray Lyles, Gary Michael Lyles, Angela Elaine Bush, Julie Turner and Bryan Locke; and two great grandchildren, Cody Turner and Aaron Bush.
