To Jillian and Justine,

I'm sure you are missing your daddy during this holiday season. Just remember that he loved you so much and he's looking down and smiling on you. I miss him, too, more than ever, but he's in heaven now, taking care of everyone just like he did when he was here! Merry Christmas to both of you!

Alan had a love for God, his daughters and life. Despite the cancer and the side effects, Alan lived his last 2 years to the fullest. He spent as much time as possible with his children, he fished, he camped, he hiked in the ice storms, he worked out, played tennis in the rain, enjoyed time with his friends, played the guitar when his fingers ached from the treatments, rode his bike and ran when his feet were numb, put the convertible down when it was cold. He taught his daughters and inspired others to never give up. As a single father, when he couldn’t be with his beloved daughters, he helped others. He was a problem solver, he helped the elderly & the young, helped friends with their resumes and job searches, trucks and motorcycle tinkering and gardens. When others questioned God, Alan praised Him. When others were down, Alan lifted their spirits. Alan was thankful for his family and friends. His love and admiration for his brother and parents was endearing. Alan admitted his mistakes, forgave others and always had a kind and inspiring word. Alan’s sense of humor and generous Christian spirit touched many. Despite the battle, Alan did a lot of living in his last 2 years and always stayed positive, prayerful and thankful.

Alan was an inspiration to so many. He attracted the most incredible friendships that helped him through his courageous battle with cancer. It was so touching to see friends help and encourage Alan. Alan’s roots were a thousand miles away, yet his friendships in Kansas City and family and friends all over the country formed an inspiring, loving and uncommon support for Alan and his daughters. Alan was in awe of the love and support, yet it was just a perfect reflection of Alan.

Dear Barrett Family,
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. Although I had not had the privilege of seeing Al since '87 I hold a special place for him in my heart. I feel certain that he and Kenny are having a great reunion behind the pearly gates. I am truly sorry for your loss.

Al, My best friend... What a beautiful service and beautiful girls, a beautiful day as only you could provide. Kym, your Mom & Dad & Gregory will do well, they have had you for their inspiration. Say "HI" TO Kenny, tell him we miss him. Since the Steelers and Giants have won the last couple of years, do you guys think you can check with the "big guy" for a little Viking destiny? You'll Always be loved & missed Chris (Bubba)

Alan was a wonderful leader and a great friend. I worked with him nearly daily for ten years at the Red Cross. He was a dedicated worker; I once saw him work for 23 hours straight before finally taking a nap on his office floor during a time of disaster. He had a great sense of humor and brought out the best in everyone. He will be sadly missed.

Barrett Family, I was so very sorry to hear of Alan's passing. He was a great joy to me over the years, while spending time with Kenny and the boys at my home. It does not surprise me that he was such a loving family man and joy to all that knew him. I will keep all of you in my prayers.

To the Barrett Family,
Alan was a great mentor at Red Cross, as well as a co-worker and my friend. Some of his funny sayings and corny jokes still stick in my mind. He touched many lives and he will be missed! May you find comfort, strength and courage during this difficult time, and may you have wonderful memories to sustain you.
