GWEN BERARDI-MYSLIWIEC Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2011.
Gwen Lee Gottung Berardi-Mysliwiec, 53, passed away August 7, 2011, at her home surrounded by her loving family and friends, following her courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Gwen was born in Burnt Hills on March 1, 1958, the first daughter and fourth child of William and Phyllis Gottung. She attended Burnt Hills schools and SUNY Cobleskill before meeting and marrying her first husband, Ralph Berardi. Together they owned and operated Shur Fine Grocery in Bradford, PA. They had their only son, Joseph; the love of her life. After divorcing and moving back to the area with her son, Gwen found her calling as a volunteer coordinator, and later as the statewide senior accountant, where she spent the next 14 years of her working life at New York Special Olympics in Schenectady. It was through this organization, and her fundraising efforts, that she met her husband, David. Gwen enjoyed traveling, gardening, renovation projects, was an avid supporter of the arts and helped raise funds for causes that were dear to her. But most of all, she loved being Aunt Gwen, and enjoyed hosting gatherings for her friends and family. In addition to her father, Gwen leaves behind her husband, David Mysliwiec; their children, Joseph Berardi, David Mysliwiec, Jr. and Dillon Mysliwiec; her brothers, Paul (Pat) Gottung, Mark (Liz) Gottung, Eric (Nancy) Gottung, Gary (Denise) Gottung; her sisters, Beth (Mike) Stalker and Lucy (John) Halstead; her father-in-law, William Mysliwiec Jr.; her mother-in-law, Mary Ann (Chuck) Kilb; her brothers-in law, William (Janet) Mysliwiec III, Michael (Kimberly) Mysliwiec, Robert (Kari) Mysliwiec, Jeffrey (Lynn) Mysliwiec and sister-in law, Tricia Mysliwiec-Cietek; 18 nieces and nephews and her great-nephew, Rex. Gwen was recently predeceased by her mother, Phyllis and nephew, Eric Alan. Funeral will be Thursday morning at 10 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Rte. 32), Waterford and at 11 a.m. at Assumption/St. Paul Church in Mechanicville, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Immediately following, interment will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Delatour Road, Watervliet. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in Gwen's memory to Caring Together, Inc., P.O. Box 12383, Albany, NY 12212 - please note "Gwen's Peeps" on the check or letter.

Dave, Joe, Dillon, David & many family members,

Our hearts ache.
Losing someone close is never easy. The incredible number of people who were touched by Gwen may help share the burden of grief, but certainly does not diminish the pain that her closest loved ones feel.
It feels like there is a hole in the world. Gwen’s whole persona – her attitude, her strength, her sense of caring & compassion, her sense of humor, her ability to make those around her feel joy, love & inspiration is what we will all miss, but it is also what will forever be a part of each of us and will, in some way begin to fill that hole.
Our hearts ache because of this hole that is also the world’s loss.
Our hearts ache because we were not able to say goodbye to our dear friend.
But our hearts ache so much more for you.

With most sincere thoughts,

The Russo family

I had the privilege of being one of Gwens Peeps over the years. I always admired her sense of courage, pride and humor when her family and friends united in Washington Park to honor and support her at the Caring Together event each year. With Sympathy,

We won't express our obvious sadness in losing such a great friend, but rather would prefer to remember her as she lived life in our area for many years. The innumerable fun filled evenings and occasional trips where our sides ached from laughter; the day Gwen and Jeanie got "loaded" with one bottle of wine and giggled at everything for hours; Gwen's uncanny ability to "murder" every plant or flower she received; Her great love and continual praise of Joe, David, Dillon and David Jr; her hardy, warm, infectious laugh - that's what we want to see in our mind's eye, not the sadness of her leaving us. Keep an eye on us Gwen, and give us the strength that you showed in fighting like Hell to stay in this world with us. Until we meet again ~ we love you!

Gwen was an exceptionally kind, giving and good-humoured woman. She was always a joy, and a great deal of fun, to be around. Aunt Gwen, I love you, thank you for taking care of me, and for all the wonderful memories.

Gwen touched my life by the testimony of who she was through Denise. Gwen truly was a person who put others first and had a sense of humor. More people should be like Gwen. What a warrior she was. May God touch your life through the memory of Gwen. Cathy King
