Hazel Garland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 7, 2011.
CHAPMAN – Hazel Anne Sloat Garland, 89, died May 5, 2011, surrounded by loving family, after a brief illness. She was born May 19, 1921, in Presque Isle, the daughter of Clara Armstrong Sloat and Benjamin Norman Sloat. She is survived by her husband, Fernald P. Garland with whom she shared 71 years of marriage and a love that continues through their seven children: Pamela G. Loft of Windham, Wanda R. Garland of Waldoboro, Janice G. Wood of Waldoboro, Fernald Timothy Garland of Bangor, Cheryl A. Crabtree of Argyle, Nita Garland of Gainesville, Fla., and Francine J.G. Stark of Winterport; 15 grandchildren, Brent, Daniel and Shane Harper, Jonathan, Benjamin and Jeremiah Loft, Leslie, Laurie, Doug and Timothy Wood, Adam and Tara Garland, Steven and Barbara Crabtree, and Hazel Z. Stark; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Hazel is survived by three of her sisters, Glenna Dunham of Deer Isle, Doris McCorison of Ellsworth and Lillian Lowell of Saco; and a half sister, Charlotte Holmes of Fort Fairfield. Hazel was the first in her family to graduate from high school and was an avid reader and learner throughout her life. Hazel gave generously of her affection and skills and was loved by many. She was a founder of the Shawl Ministry at Grant Memorial Methodist Church, where she was a member throughout her adult life. A woman of profound faith and courageous spirit, she inspired others through her participation in Bible study and served as president of United Methodist Women. She was a 4-H leader for 17 years. Hazel and Fernald were members and leaders of Spud Shufflers Square Dance Club and danced together beautifully for 30 years. Famous for her doughnuts, bread and homemade macaroni, Hazel was a fantastic cook and happy to teach others – though she kept secrets about her cooking and wrote very sketchy instructions. Hazel was a strong woman. She managed a household full of children and was always a full partner in the farm work, baling hay and nursing orphaned lambs. Hazel and Fernald together planted more than three million trees in Aroostook County. In their many trips on the Allagash Waterway, Hazel and Fernald were unbeatable in their 21-foot White Canoe. As their children struggled to keep up, with Hazel in the bow, smiling and paddling smoothly, they would glide across the big lakes, filled with joy and appreciation for the woods, water and wildlife and the opportunity each day to live and love. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, Presque Isle, with Pastor Ron Chaffee officiating. A reception will be after at the church. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be at Worth Grendell Cemetery, West Chapman. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope and Justice Project, 754 Main St., Presque Isle, ME 04769 or the charity of your choice. To honor Hazel's memory, knit a shawl with love and prayer to wrap around someone in need. Arrangements are in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home. I was talking to my brother Gary tonight and he said Hazel had passed
away. My deepest sympathy. I have many memories in the
Garland House. Started 4-H there. Still remember Head, Health, Heart and Hands. Either Pam, Wanda or Janice gave me Sax lessons. What a legacy the family has - planting over 3,000,000 trees but more
important was the Christian influence they had on may lives. Wanda and
Janice, I will have to look you up some time. Pam, you must live within
15 miles of me. Again my sympathy.

Dear Fernald and Family, What wonderful memories we all have of working in 4-H and at the Extension Farm Field Day. Our paths have not crossed for many years but we fondly remember those days and activities at the Northern Maine Fair. May God continue to guide you and grant you His peace and joy.

Wanda & Family,
It has been many years since we ran the roads together, but you remain in my heart. I think of you often as I knit Prayer Shawls and what a wonderful ministry you brought to Aroostook County and the Methodist Churches. I hope each and everyone one of you has one to wrap up in during this time of grief,
Love,

Dear Uncle Fernald and all of my seven cousins as well as all of Aunt Hazel's extended family I send you my deepest sympathy and love. My heart is melting with treasured memories of my precious Aunt and her baby sister, my mother. I will never forget my last visit with Aunt Hazel as we talked about one of the many times she influenced her baby sister for the good. It is amazing how one person from a little country town can impact so many lives. I will always remember a time in my childhood when I had the joy of spending one week with my cousin Janice, my other cousins and Aunt Hazel and Uncle Fernald. What a wonderful week it was for a city girl to experience all the love and excitement of this special family, farm life and being awakened the first morning by a very vocal rooster and the sun streaming across my face. Janice greeted me with her beautiful smile and I knew that I was somewhere very special. Even though this was a time in my early childhood I can still remember like it was yesterday Aunt Hazel's sweet ways: always smiling, thoughtful, kind and wise. We enjoyed talking about my mother together. I'll miss that too but I know it's only for a time. I find joy in knowing my Aunt and mother are together again because of Who was in their hearts and I know I will see them again someday. Uncle Fernald I want you to know that you are in my prayers. I wish every marriage could be like yours and Aunt Hazel's...it's an example of a little heaven on earth, "God is love" and the Garland home is where love is always first and that speaks volumes. Uncle Fernald, thank you too for all the love, kindness and good things you have given over the years and for being a great husband to my Aunt Hazel. I love you and my heart and prayers are with you. We will miss Aunt Hazel very much. I always loved her company, her great sense of humor, her dedication to her priciples and faith, and her genuine concern for others. She was a "Rich" women that seemed to bring out the best in everyone that she was with. A very encouraging person that will always be in our hearts.

Dear Uncle Fernald and all my doubly related cousins, -- my sympathy to all of you at this time. But oh, what grand reunions take place and how excited and filled with joy and love to embrace those she had loved and lost a while. As Job exclaimed, "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. Blessed be the name of the Lord!" -- Aunt Hazel had a "commanding influence" -- spoken from a Marine of 32 years! From the time I was a boy -- to the last time I saw her -- as I approached her I always had a feeling that I was being "inspected" -- and I've stood a few inspections in my life -- but she had the ability to look into a person. I was always relieved to finally see the smile and receive the hug knowing then that I had passed inspection. I loved being around her because she and Uncle Fernald would tell me stories of my father, Harley. And if it wasn't for Hazel being married to Fernald, Harley and Clarice wouldn't have met. So, in the long run, Hazel is responsible for my being here! God bless her -- and all of you, especially Uncle Fernald -- you are all in my prayers.

My deepest sympathy to Uncle Fernald and my seven cousins and their perspective familes. What an honor it was to have this wonderful down to earth Christian lady Aunt Hazel in my life. What a great joy it was to drive her around Richmond, VA. when her granddaughter Tara was getting married. What a sense of humor....she had all of us in stiches...... She has not only made a difference in my life, but has changed so many others hearts with her grace, love and wisdom. My prayer is that the Garland family will lift up all those wonderful memories they shared with (Mom) Hazel as I have and realize that they can take comfort in knowing that they now have a very special guardian angel to watch over all of them. God's blessings to the Garland family....Uncle Fernald I love you.....I'am huggin you....my tears of joy are for all the love and guidance you and Aunt Hazel have instilled in my life......

Hazel was present with whomever she spoke. She had style without pretense, wisdom without pride, courage without boasting. She loved the simple pleasures of life: holding babies, watching hummingbirds, picking wild strawberries, laughing loud and long, seeing life as new adventure every day, and walking in faith with a pure heart. I can't believe it is now my season on earth without her hand to hold, but I know families are meant to be forever. One day we will dance with joy, and talk long and laugh much.

I send my deepest sympathy to all of the Garland family. I have heard about her your Mom amd Grandmother so much and recall how much she was loved and respected by all. I also recall how Tim helped me through the tough times when I was dealing with my Mom's passing, and will be forever grateful. After reading Hazel's obituary, I have an enhanced understanding of how much she is loved by so many. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

The loss of Hazel has brought back so many memories of my childhood. I learned so much from her in my 10 years of 4-H; she treated me like one of her own. I, too, am part of a prayer shawl ministry and will knit one in her memory. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

My thoughts are with you all ... I remember your Mom (and Dad) when we visited the farm on a field trip in 4th grade. From what I just read there are so many beautiful memories and now you will hear many more, as your Mom's influence did not stop with her family ... the beauty of her presence is everywhere and lasting.

I am so sorry hear about Hazel. I only saw her when I would go to the family reunions in Brooksville. I will say how sorry I am to not get to many of them but when I did it had been yrs. in between Hazel would always remember who I was and she was always very enjoyable to talk with. I enjoyed the talks. She would mention my father as a young boy. She will be surely missed! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Brian & Heidi (McCorison) Burgess
