He was predeceased by wife Helen; grandson Kogi and sisters, Margaret and Mary. John was born and raised in Calgary. He attended King George and Crescent Heights schools excelling in sports, especially hockey. After going to Normal School, he taught in Lousanna and New Dayton becoming very well known for his teaching and coaching skills. He met and married the love of his life, Helen Vallery in 1940. They lived in the Roberts family home and son Jack was born in December, 1942. John left teaching at Rideau Park to join the RCAF training to be a navigator. During the war, he was overseas for three years with the RAF teaching navigation in England. On his return, John went to U of A, Edmonton and University of Washington. Seattle to further his education. He worked several jobs as well as attending classes to be able to afford to have Helen and son Jack with him. In 1948, they returned to Calgary for the birth of Lynda. John taught at Western Canada High School achieving great success with his various sports teams. In 1953, he became Supervisor of Physical Education and Director of Athletics for the Calgary Board of Education. His career then focused on sport for youth. He was a founding member of the Alberta Schools Athletic Association, an active participant in the Calgary Booster Club and inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. Besides his teaching career, John spent ten summers as Director of Kamp Kiwanis using his leadership skills with staff to provide a memorable camp experience to hundreds of underprivileged children. He was also a committed and faithful member of St. Matthew's United Church giving generously of his time and talents. John's family was important to him. He was proud of his children and their accomplishments and reveled in the activities and achievements of his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Retiring in 1978, John and Helen travelled extensively, making many lasting friendships as well as spending time together at their cabin on Lake Windermere. John loved to garden, golf and curl. He organized the senior's drop-in curling until he was 90 years old! He lived in his own home, moving to Royal Park at the age of 91. Last May John broke his hip and moved to long- term care at Chinook Park and then the Colonel Belcher. The family is grateful to the care centre staff as well as companion Wendy for their caring attention to John. John Mayell was an exceptional individual who made a difference in so many lives because he went beyond what was expected of him. My condolences to the Mayell family and the Roberts Family on the loss of a dear family member and one of the best teachers I ever had. It was Mr. Mayell who gave me the self esteme to realize that I was capable of succeeding in the school and in life. I have thought of him often in my life and am grateful for his ability to draw out the best in his students. Ruth (Wylie)Bond.

My condolences to the family, friends and lifetime of colleagues and aquaintences who like me have been impacted by John's contributions to the community. I clearly recall his inspiring visit to our PE class at AE Cross Jr. High '62. Always an encouraging word at athletic events over the years and always knew our names! His legacy is far reaching and lives on. We have all benefitted.

John will be so greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Bill and I thought of John and Helen as a team. To son Jack, your mention of the church building was appreciated; Bill was chairman of the building committee for the third building, and appreciated Helen's practical ideas for the church kitchen and furnishings. We all benefited from John and Helen's mentoring and friendship. Jean Duke

Jake, Megan, Lynda, Brian and Families.
Your Dad meant so very much to both Lorraine and me. John was my teacher and mentor. Without a doubt, he was a teacher who changed the course of my life. In my high school days, I remember that he was an inspired basketball coach who brought the game to a new level in Calgary. I am forever grateful for his support in my diving and gymnastic accomplishments. Always I have appreciated his leadership and strong work effort to develop high school athletics in Calgary. I have felt a part of his family as he included Lorraine and me in several family celebrations.
May this sad time be filled with wonderful memories and stories for he lived the good life - a friend to all.
Our heartfelt sympathy to each of you.

What a wonderful life he had and what a great legacy he has left for his family.

It has been one of the treasured memories of our travels ( and I know, also, of my late mother's) to have enjoyed Mayell hospitality and to have met most of you. And it has given us great pleasure to have been able to return that hospitality. Here's hoping that the friendship and shared times continue.

We send our warmest condolences and love to Jake, Lynda and your families.

It was an honour to work with John so many many years ago. I was fortunate to know him for over 55 years.......first as a school athlete where John seemed to take an interest in me as an athlete and later encouraging me to become a PE teacher. And years later to become a PE Consultant for the CBE. I was lucky to have him as a Mentor and friend most of my life. The City of Calgary, Sports and Education have lost one of the great ones!
My deepest condulences go out to his family. I am presently down South but my heart is with you at this time.
Sincerely,
Sheila Iversen, Calgary, Alberta

Everything written in your Father's obituary honored him as a person. He was a very dear man & true to his nature.
Please except my deepest condolences. for your loss. May it bring some consolation that your Father's life was very well lived. "Well done, good & faithful servant"

My best memories of John were when our family used to visit the Mayells up at their cabin, and I was a little tiny girl scared to go in the boat! I think I still have a picture of me in a navy and white sailor bathing suit, looking a little nervous before we went out on the lake. : )
It's an honour to know that my family has been impacted and enriched in such an amazing way by John and his dear family for the entire length of my life.
Wishing you God's Blessings and Much Love, especially at this sad time.

I grew up living close to Mr Mayell in the area of Glendale, Calgary. He was an inspiration to me and made me want to become a Phys Ed. teacher when I was 18. After I changed my career path and wanted to become a police officer, he supported me and was kind enough to be a reference for my application. He always had time for me when I wanted to visit, and was cheerful and happy to share his experiences and his wisdom. He will be missed by many.
