Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 27, 2015.
BANGOR - Karen Evelyn Barnett, 60, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on January 26, 2015. She was born on May 30, 1954, in Island Falls, the daughter of William and Cecilia (Colberg) Barnett.

Karen grew up in Silver Ridge and graduated from Katahdin High School in 1972. Karen and her then husband, Richard Bell, owned and operated the Woodland IGA in Baileyville for 23 years. She also managed Friends Market in Presque Isle and was an AmeriCorps volunteer and Emergency Services Manager at the Red Cross in Portland during her career. Her most important role came as a caregiver to her parents in the last few years of her life.  Karen was actively involved in many community and educational programs during her time in Baileyville. She represented the business community as a mentor to children and helped to facilitate student activities for drug awareness. She was a board member and treasurer of the St. Croix Players which produced, directed and built community theatre in rural Maine. Karen had a passion for painting, art, gardening, reading, and women's activism. Most especially, she enjoyed her time spent with family and friends. She cherished her time spent at Silver Ridge, Meddybemps Lake and Stockton Springs with those special people in her life. Karen was a beautiful soul and will be remembered always for her compassion and generosity, her amazing strength and courage, and her love of family and friends. Her beautiful green eyes and big gorgeous smile warmed the heart of everyone she knew.

She is survived by her father; loving daughter and son, Marcie Bell-Boure and husband, Andy, John Bell and wife, Amanda; precious grandchildren, Kayla Gagner, Everett Hanson and Easton Bell. She has five devoted brothers, Maurice Barnett and wife, Michelle, Michael Barnett and wife, Angela, Peter Barnett and wife, Candy, Billy Barnett and wife, Mary, and Reggie Hartford. Her nieces and nephews include: Mariah Barnett, Brad Barnett, Eli Barnett, Josh Guiggey, Journey Giggey, Joleen Morgan and husband, Fred, Donald Merrill, Nick Barnett, Alex Barnett, Laura Barnett, David Hartford, Joseph Hartford, Holly Bell Ingram and husband, Bryan, Sarah Bell Thomas and husband, Mike, Sam Bell, Kevin Morgan, Eli Morgan, McKenzie Morgan, Gabriell Merrill, and Aiden Ingram; a special friend and companion, Elliot Chandler, will remember her fondly as will her dear friends Max and Allan Cameron, Mari and John Birmingham, Sally Perkins, Elaine Neilander, Liz Toner, Susan Bell, Kathy and Ed Bell, Kathy Hopkins, Moira Daniells, Sue Leavitt and Tonya Corriveau. Karen was predeceased by her mother; and a nephew, Eric Barnett.

God provided our meeting when In least expected it. I was at CCOM that day to be with my sister-in-law, Lyndy who was there for her chemo treatment. I got up to get something (Don't ask me what!) and Karen stropped me as I was going by her room. She asked me if I would sit with her for a few minutes and we started to talk. She told me about her wonderful family and was excited that she was getting an apartment in Bangor so she could be closer to CCOM and her doctors. We had a lovely visit and we exchanged phone numbers. We talked about once a week, because I didn't want to wear her out with my ramblings. I wrote to her, too, and was so excited to get an invitation to visit. I got to visit twice and met her beautiful daughter.
I knew the last visit was going to be my last. The light in her eyes was becoming dimmer, she was in pain, sleep deprived and weak, and not wanting to leave her family. Two days later, I received a text message from her daughter that Karen was called to Heaven .
What a beautiful, wise, loving woman God gave me to love, too. I could tell that she loved deeply, thoroughly and sweetly, but she had magnificent strength. I can't tell you how blest I still am when I think of her! Our relationship was not long, but Karen touched my life with her sweetness and love. I hope that she meets my 5 month-old granddaughter who is with God and Jesus, too!

Memories flood my heart as I think of Karen. I remember the song she sang for our elementary school talent show - she was good! Picking potatoes, riding the Silver Ridge Bus, meeting at Janie's house cause it was in between...so many - with that blonde hair flying and that smile lighting up the world. My prayers and condolences for her dear family. Until we meet again on Heaven's shore. God Bless.

John, Marcie and Family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Your Mom loved you all dearly and was such a Wonderful and helpful Lady to all that crossed her path. She gave many children a chance for employment in the area that never would have had any.
She seen the potential in all. Hold your memories close to help you get through the rough days. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

My memories are from our KHS years. Having over nights at each other's homes and sharing our girl hood dreams and experiences as teenagers do. We had many classes together and I always would sit behind Karen (Barnett/Bates) and keep chatting to her until she would say "wer're going to get in trouble if you don't stop making me giggle". We brought out our acting prowess in the several plays we were in together. Hollowood always just out of reach! These memories will always be dear to my heart. Our recent outing on New Years Day with several of our 1972 classmates, Sally Perkins, Eaine Neilander, Tonya Corriveau, myself and Karen wins so special and bitter sweet . Thank you Karen for sharing a day with us. My little angel hangs where I can see it everyday and will keep me close to you until we meet again. Fly with the angels sweet Karen.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Karen and I had a lot of fun together, hunting with your Dads new Bronco, making bridges to get across the gullies. Some day I will tell you the hunting story about the partridge . It's a good one. Love to

We met at CCOM, both of us patients in July. We shared with each other tales of our children. We prayed for them and Karen's Dad especially when her Mom, Cecilia died. Karen was a woman full of peace and full of grace. God blessed me by giving me time with her and her family that I will will always cherish.
Love just poured out of her heart into anyone she spoke with. Beautiful from the inside out. I am surely blessed by our meeting and time writing and visiting each other. Kaiye Holt
