MARY STANICK Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 22, 2014.
STANICK, Mary
Mary Stanick passed away on Jan 11, 2014 at the age of 86 at the Minoru residence. Born in Wpg. of Martin and Anna Kryschuk. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years Gerald Stanick, their three daughters, Leslie, Toni, Laura (Brian Rumsby), grandchildren Travis, Jenny (Chris Stones), great granddaughter Hope Stones, brother George Kryschuk and wife Chris, nephews Brad and Brent, and sister-in-law Lorraine Zuk, nephews Jim and Ken. Mary and Gerald were married in Wpg. 1953 and soon after studied viola at Indiana U. Upon returning to Wpg. both embarked on rich and varied musical careers, taking them to USA, Europe, and Asia. Mary played in the Wpg. and, Milwaukee orchestras and CBC and opera orchestras in Vancouver - also ran the Vancouver violin shop. Adored by her daughters she was not only a mother but was also a friend and confidant and was there for them at any time. In the late 90's she was diagnosed with Alzheimer disease and this beautiful woman with a warm heart and a broad smile for all, began her long terrible journey. Year after year she showed great courage, humour and gratitude to those who helped her, including our beautiful dog Polo, and even at the end emanated love and a special dignity. Thank you to the private caregivers who did so much to provide comfort and companionship for Mary, and the caregivers at Minoru for their patience and understanding in performing one of the most difficult jobs of all, and lastly thanks to the very special Kinsmen Adult Day Care who provide a lot of sunshine for the elderly. A memorial-fund raising concert will be held later in the year.

My beloved mother had a generous heart, several
times bringing me with her on the long bus trips with the symphony. I was 16 when she invited me to Join her on the bus with all the musicians! It's been over 20+years since she passed. I will always remember my mother: she was bright and full of energy. She LOVED playing viola in the symphony, and enjoyed the wide range of lovely musicians who had been playing for so many decades.
I got my two important injections and then sat down to watch a long and delightful animated movie. It was delightful. Mary was with me the whole time ~ here, deep inside my heart. May my beautiful mother always be remembered for her love and vivacity! I miss you mom! You are forever in my heart, my beautiful dear mother! We will always be together. I love you mom!
You will be in my heart forever!
Yours always,
Leslie Roxanne Stanick

I was so sorry to hear recently of Mary's passing. While she was an inspiration to many young violists, she was a particularly big part of my life and career. Her warmth and generosity were evident from the first time we met and her constant encouragement and support did much to keep me and many others striving to be the best we could be, both as violists and as people. She will be sorely missed.
