Miles R. Early, Jr. of Hummelstown entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at the Hershey Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was 93 years old.
Miles (known as Beep to his grandchildren) was born on April 5, 1922 in Rutherford Heights, PA to the late Miles R. Early, Sr. and Alma E. (Yohn) Early. He graduated from Hummelstown High School in 1941 and later served in World War II as a helicopter mechanic in the Pacific Theater. He worked at Olmsted Air Force Base in Middletown for many years as an airplane and jet engine mechanic and eventually retired from the Naval Air Propulsion Test Center in West Trenton, NJ. He was a long-time member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Hummelstown and was also a member of the American Legion Post 265. Miles loved his country, was an avid gardener, enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, working in his garage workshop and being with his family. He especially enjoyed visits from his great grandchildren.
Miles is survived by his wonderful and devoted wife of 73 years, Evelyn R. (Cooper) Early; children Richard M. Early, Sr. and wife Gloria of Huntingdon County, Marie E. Herr and husband Robert of Palmyra, and Stanley L. Early and wife Dawn of Hummelstown. Also surviving are grandchildren Richard M. Early Jr. and wife Cindy, Christine M. Frantz and husband Tim, Donald M. Shearer Jr., Scott E. Shearer and wife Dena, and Amy D. Bailey and husband Zachary; as well as five great-grandchildren Joseph Frantz, Hannah Frantz, Jackson Shearer, Ava Bailey, and John Bailey. In addition, Miles is survived by brothers Robert Early, John Early, and sister Naomi Early and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Josephine Smith and son-in-law Donald M. Shearer Sr.
Services will be held on Friday, July 24, 2015, with the viewing starting at 10:00am in the Hoover Funeral Home, Route 422 & Lucy Ave., Hershey. The funeral service will follow at 11:00am with The Reverend Jason R. Mackey officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main Street, Hummelstown, PA 17036. Condolences may be shared online at www.hooverfuneralhome.com.
